How can I tell a 77-78 5spd from a 81-83 5spd transmission. Both units are out of the car. Is there some embossed marks that would identify one from the other? I want to get the 81-83 280z, 5spd. On the same subject what is a fair price for a junkyard 5spd transmission? The guy wants $450. Seems too high to me. Thanks GREG

I'm sure this will start some intense debate. At the unveiling of the 350Z in Japan, the prototype car was RHD. (see news item posted by Z-point & subsequent thread). This implies that the pre-production mules would have been RHD and thus #0001 will be a RHD 350Z, not the LHD 350Z that is being sold on e-bay. When one thinks more about this, it becomes evident that #00001 240Z [or any of the Z series] would have also been RHD and not LHD as has been suggested. I'll now duck for cover, have a great weekend, look forward to some debate on Monday!

You cannot listen to everyone you gotta try things yourself. The standard carbs that come with the 240Z do a good job of supplying fuel all the way up to 6500RPM, then the engine starts to become breathless. I run my car in sprint events with a standard 240 block, N42 head and free flow header with two and a quarter inch exhaust (+- 160 HP) and stay within two seconds a lap of the guys with 260 motors and triple weber carbs. I load the car with spare tyres, tools and camping gear and travel 300 km to events, unload everything, race, and drive home again. the next weekend I will be taking the car down the coast road for a within the speed limit relaxing drive. Thats what I…

So......I have a sad story to tell. 7 years ago my good friend and felllow Z enthusiast lovingly restored a 78 280. frame up. Car had received a body kit, turbo hood, 76 280 motor & trans, 3 angle valve job, new cam, struts, sway bars, etc etc. It was painted in a 1995 BMW yellow. He ran into some money trouble and sold the car to, well lets say a blithering idiot when it comes to cars. The car developed a short in the harness and lost power to the FI. 11 times I offered my assistance to the new owner which did not interest him. Nope he kept saying, I just need to get out there and get motivated. I bought the car yesterday for 200 bucks. The sunroof proceeded to lea…

I have a 73 240z that has been stored for 20 years. Is there a way to get oil to the bearings and valve train before I attempt to turn the engine over, or is the only solution taking the head and oil pan off and checking everything out first hand. I was hoping to at least start the engine(was running well before storage) to determine if there was valve or oil burning problems. Thanks.
