Betamotorsports, LLC is merging with Benton Performance, LLC. John Benton and I are merging our talent and equipment in an expanded shop in the same Lambert Palm business complex. By the end of the year Betamotorsports will cease to exist as a business entity and we will continue under the Benton Performance brand. Benton Performance will continue to serve Betamotorsports racing customers and will continue with our Datsun expertise, augmenting Benton Performances extensive expertise in early air cooled Porsches (356, 912, and 911s). Despite the freezing temperatures, wind, and occasional flurries, I made it out to Caffeine and Octane. The 260Z was a little grumpy starting out since it had not been driven in about two months. However, once it got warm, it purred. I bought a better camera and went wild with the pictures. One of my fellow Georgia Z Club members gave me a set of flat-top carbs & air cleaner that he had left over from scavenging parts. I think he said they came with an N36. Here's the link to the blog post: Caffeine and Octane March 2013 | Fiddling With Z Cars I've also attached a picture of the cars of the die-hard S30 gang.

Doh! Oil from gasket/seal leaks generally flows downward and towards the rear of the car from the site of the leak. It generally does NOT flow upwards, against gravity, or towards the front of the car, against airflow. Seems fairly simple, doesn't it? If you've got a leaking rear seal, transmission rear seal, whatever, the oil can get slung in a circle AROUND that leaking seal, and perhaps drip back down, but it's generally pretty obvious what's going on from the road grime that sticks to the "circle of oil." Oil almost NEVER appears ABOVE the level of the leak, unless slung. Case in point, I take a 2000 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 in for a pre-purchase inspect…

So I'm a college student working full time to eat and go to school. I have an Isuzu Trooper and it just does not get good gasmileage, good car, but not sensible. So I'm going to sell it and get a car, something with at least decent gas mileage. I really want to get a 510, maybe I'll be lucky enough to find one. There are a few locally but most are in pieces and I need something that I can get driving relatively soon or right away. Anyhow... My dad and I always get in fights about this. He believes I should get a new car, like brand new from the dealer because it won't have endless problems. I say no at the very least I'll get a used car, preferably an older car (I like ol…

Hey, I'm looking for some advice (imagine that!) Trying to figure out what to get for my next sports car. My 91 turbo MR2 is getting a little tired. it's always been lousy coming off the line. I love it from 40-90 and it gets fabulous mileage, great looks, aerodynamics, but I can't find anyone qualified to rebuild the tranny, put in new synchros, etc. Lots of backlash too when I let off the gas. Bottom line is I really have to feather the transmission no matter what I'm doing. d My 1980 280ZX is a lot better off the line, nice on the highway, but it's an endless project. Two things fail before I get the last thing fixed. Synchros are shot in it as well I have to sh…

Here in Florida, we have the option of using a year-matching license plate on our over 25 yr. old cars. I had a 70-71 plate that was correct for my county on my '71. The plate is yours as long as you own the car. Well, back in July 2012, I unfortunately wrecked the '71. Got my agreed valuation from my insurance, and proceeded to purchase a '72 240. I had taken the plate from the '71 to return it to the friend who gave it to me. He traded me the '72 plate for my new toy. I sent the plate to DMV in Tallahassee with the requisite form and a check. They 'authenticate' the plate to make sure it is original and not restored. A month went by, no plate. My check had been cashed h…

There is a new kind of automotive sport that I've noticed recently, called Valve Cover Racers, or rocker box Racing. It's like scouting's Pinewood Derby, but instead you use a valve cover with wheels on it. The general rules are that you can use just about any valve cover you like, with a maximum length of 24 inches, a width of 10 inches, and a weight of 5 pounds. Some competitions have themed races, like Ford or Chevy, or they may have different classes like stock, modified, or anything-goes.

After seeing many of the edited versions of the meteor that hit Russia, I decided to go on a search for high resolution images and some uncut raw video of the incident. What we have here is a VERY close call! How ironic that it happens around the same time a larger asteroid just about hits the earth later in the day?! The chances of having an impact with injuries on the same day as DA14 are beyond astronomical. Enjoy.
