How could I fiddle with old, rusty Z's for 15 years and not know about Electrolytic Rust Removal? Someone else mentioned it here, I Googled it and studied these articles: Electrolytic Rust Removal http://www3.telus.net/public/aschoepp/electrolyticrust.html http://www.buchanan1.net/rust.shtml Electrolysis Rust Removal http://www.htpaa.org.au/article-electro.php The process was cheap, didn't require any nasty chemicals, didn't produce any nasty chemicals, and seemed to produce good results, and since I have no shortage of old rusty Z parts lying around, I decided to give it a try. I went to the grocery store and bought a box of washing powder, which is simply sodiu…

I lost a "Z" hub cap when I took my Z out for a drive recently. So I decided to refinish a few caps, one replacement and a couple of spares. After digging through my stash, I found a few suitable donors. The topic of hubcap refinishing has been addressed before, but I thought I'd document the steps I took to bring these hub caps back to life. I began by removing the center ornaments. I used a pick to bend up the tabs on the retainer clips. The clips could then be pulled off. Next, the hub caps got a bath in hot, soapy water. After drying them off, I wiped them down with a wax & grease remover to make sure all dirt, grease & grime was completely removed. I…

This Article was found by Gary, AKA Beandip. I uploaded it for him. Though it is not Z specific, it does contain info that makes it worthy of the "tech section" . Because there is not a General Automotive section, or a Brake section, I posted it here as it is a technical article. The "Warped" Brake Disc and Other Myths of the Braking System By Carroll Smith Copyright © 2001 all rights reserved StopTech LLC Myth # 1 – BRAKE JUDDER AND VIBRATION IS CAUSED BY DISCS THAT HAVE BEEN WARPED FROM EXESSIVE HEAT. The term "warped brake disc" has been in common use in motor racing for decades. When a driver reports a vibration under hard braking, inexperienced crews, afte…

I recently completed swapping a four speed manual transmission into my originally automatic-equipped 240Z. I got much of the info to plan this conversion from this site, but found that there was no one thread or article that contained all the information that I needed. So to give back some to the group that has helped me, I decided to try to document the whole process in one place. Disclaimer: While the basic process, theory and parts requirements should be valid for any S30, the exact details of my swap will apply only to my exact situation - installing an early four speed (Type A - F4W71A) into a left hand drive early '71 240Z (10/70 series 1). That said, much of this i…

Being winter, it's dark sooner and longer than normal. So with that in mind, I really notice how dark the interior is when I drop my keys on the mat in front me. After digging for a minute and finally having to get out of the car and reach down to get the keys, I figure it's time for an upgrade. Some of you will like it and some of you won't. But the plain and simple truth is "The dome lights in these cars SUCK azz" So I got online and started looking for your basic 12 volt interior lights. this turned out to be Mission Impossible. So I used Goooogle to look deeper and found this site.... Directron.com and this link will take you directly to the lights in question. It…

Adjusting SUs ,round tops only, is realy not difficult. There is a must in the way of tools to do it correctly. To ballance the ammount of air being drawn into the two units you must have a method of measureing the air flow. The tool comes with different names and brands. Mine is a UNI-SUN made by Edelbrock. Available at the local speed shop and some cycle shops. I paid $25.00 for mind. To start with remove the air cleaner cover and filter. Start the engine and warm it to driving temp. This may take 10 + min. to really warm the engine and not just the thermostat and sending unit. These engines do take a while to get up to temp. When sufficently warmed up and the engine at…

Run up on a couple of pictures the other day of the front panel and bottom of the A/C & heater controls for a factory installed system. Noticed something a little bit strange in that the various connections did not match what's in the FSM for a 75 280Z. I dug out a spare vacuum control valve (P/N: 27031-N3110)...(which is the later valve according to the fiche)...and it matched up exactly with the picture in regards to the connections as far as layout goes. According to the 75 FSM the connections are laid out in a slightly different way?? Wondering if anyone can confirm this by a visual of the vacuum control valve you might have on hand...(assuming you have it out of…

Posted to the mailing list by Carl Beck: Hi Gang: In my earlier Post - I referred to a "#1, #2 and #3 car"... several people ask exactly what that meant. So I thought I'd Post this information again. "The Old Cars Price Guide" is just one of several value guides published in the Classic, Collectible and Special Interest market. The values given are just "guides".. not absolute values and they are based on data collected at public auctions and reported from speciality dealers as well as experts for the various marquees. The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) also publishes price guides - their "Cars of Particular Interest" (CPI) book covers Classic, C…

Sugar scoops

Fiberglass sugar scoops I have heard so many times these can not be repaired that I get tired of it. It is not true and a lot of repairable parts are being discarded that should not be. This left one I am going to use as an example was over trimmed a quarter inch and was cracked along the edge that bolts to the fender and lower fender valance. The first thing I did was to sand the sugar scoop to see the damage and then laid up a ply of fiberglass mesh and resin as a base: Using this as a base I added plies of fiber glass cloth and resin to build up the edge and fill area where the cracks had been ground to a "V" on both sides. Giving the scoop the Strength needed …
