I got the turbo on, but did not hook up the intake or outlet of the compressor. I check for oil flow by spinning the engine with the plugs out, seemed like quite a bit of oil came out from the bottom port on the turbo. I was concerned that it may starve the top of the engine (cam shaft) of oil so I pulled the valve cover to confrim oil was still flowing from the cam lobes (it was). So the moment of truth, it started right up (should as nothing changed but the added exhaust manifold and turbo). BUT there seemed to be a ton of smoke coming from the exhaust pipe, oil burning smoke. Since the engine did not smoke before the turbo I have to assume its oil from the turbo.…

I briefly owned a JDM 2.0L 70 Fairlady in college (around '95) that I traded a Marine a motorcycle for. I really loved it, but it ended up being beyond my abilities in terms of rust and foolishly let it go to the scrapyard - triple carbs, magnesium wheels, and everything. I've lost many nights' sleep over that tragedy since then - particularly since I ended up in a restoration career - so when I decided to call it quits with other folks' cars, I bought myself the most rust-free '72 Z I could find - to make amends for my past sins, I suppose. 🙂 I'm glad I stumbled upon this forum - I'm already learning tons of history and historical details, going very much down t…

If the distributor drive gear has moved (spun) on the spindle shaft, isn't it likely to do it again? If the gear has moved, doesn't this make tang alignment by gear tooth a crapshoot, timing-wise? Speaking of which, can anyone say how many degrees of rotation in one tooth? Wouldn't remedial adjustment screw up the alignment required between the gear punch mark and oil hole? Does this matter? Is the only reliable remedy (short of the install of a locating pin, if one could determine the gear's original orientation on the shaft) to replace the spindle shaft/drive gear? Are new spindle shafts available?

So we stripped the 50 year old chrome off the front and rear bumpers for prime and paint. It appears that the fronts were actually made in 3 pieces and welded together. Totally surprised. I wonder if anyone ever knew this.

I am in the process of restoring my brake and fuel lines and was wondering if there is an option to replace the rubber piggyback hoses to a braided SS line. I’m mainly wondering about the connection between the actual lines. Only thing I can think of is using a AN connector but that would mean I need to braze on AN connectors on every line… anyone have another idea? The lines actually turned out very nice. I sanded them all down and coated them black, I’ll have to take a finished pic when they are installed.

Geez louise, I need to repair the 02 sensor hole on the cast iron down pipe from the turbo. Its hopelessly stripped (not enough left to chase). So I figure heli coil etc... BIG bucks I mean like cheap o kit 100$ good stuff 200+. Perhaps its the hard iron that needs some really good taps to work with? there are some cheap kits on amazon for as low as 35$ but they all have terrible reviews. Took it to a machine shop was told 130$. So if any of you guys have some exp with how to fix cast iron O2 sensor hole, please speak up. I have another possible solution, the hole is set in a cast in flange area that had a heat shield bolted to the cast iron. I am pretty sure I can …

All, Searched the archives but this may be new issue due to the supply chain limitations we all live in today. Need to rebuild my L28 and will use the components/cores (block and head) in the car now. Engine is NA ITB's. N42 block and N42 head, stock, zero previous head work or zero bore on the block. Every builder I've engaged on average is 6 months + to rebuild. A large portion of the timeframe is waiting for suppliers to deliver parts, pistons etc.. Would like to pre-purchase / acquire the internals prior to pulling the engine (car still runs), to cut down the rebuild timeframes. Understand bearing and other internal parts cannot be purchased until di…

I have a 1978 280z that I am so close to getting back on the road after 4 years. I can't get the turn signals to work and I am at a standstill. After searching forums the obvious thing was to check the hazard switch (hazards work). I jumped the green/yellow to the green at C7 to rule out the hazard switch. With the wires jumped I see 12v at the turn signal. Removing the jumper and keeping the hazard switch in-line I see 12v as well. As you can see in the picture, the connector to the turn signal has the following wires G WR WB GB RY RW With the turn signal in the middle position I have 12v at the G wire and the GB wire. When I move the turn…

Why are 240z's with 4 speeds just as valuable as those that have been converted to 5 speeds? I get that show cars that compete as "original" need them. But that is a small minority compared to all of those (with 4 speeds) that have sold on Bring a Trailer, for example. So, setting show cars aside, why are they as valuable? Being a Datsun enthusiast for over 30 years (early 240z and 510s in particular), my recollection is that nearly everyone chucked the 4 speeds and "upgraded" with various 5 speeds options and matching rear end ratios as necessary. I'd love the hear others thoughts and opinions as to whether you agree with the premise or not and if you do, why the va…
