I've read about a lot of you doing some engine rebuilds in your basements (during these winter months), or garages, depending on your location. So, depending on how easily accessible your basement is, how do you get the engine there? I would really like to rebuild my L24 in my 280z, but my basement is only accessible from a bulk head (outside, obviously) or another staircase indoors, not the best option.. If anyone has been in my same position, do you have any advice for a young aspiring mechanic, on how to successfully transfer the engine? Happy Holidays, John

This is a scenario : Knowing the end is near for some common parts to no longer be available , what would you buy right away befor becomimg extinct ? Or , what parts are getting really hard to find, and it's now time to get them ? Specifically for the early 240z , but mention other possible NLA stuff as well !

When I got #32 last year, the engine bay was pretty dirty and covered with overspray from a repaint it received many years before. Recently I went to install new Ztherapy carbs and I decided to clean things up as best I could without pulling the engine, and sending everything off to get replated. I'll do that at some point, but want to enjoy the car as is for awhile first. Here are a couple of before and after pics. Still not perfect, but much better than it was. -Mike

Hello all So I have finally decided to begin the slow restoration of my Z. The car is roughly 80% restored when I bought her back in August. As stated above this is a "slow" restoration. I'm doing everything I can myself and anything I can't do I'll at least attempt. Its going to take a while is the whole point really. I'm starting with the skid plate on my Z. Taking it off, sanding it down to bare metal, straightening and painting a nice gray color. Before I do that here's a few pics of my 1976 280z.

So a buddy calls to tell me about a 240Z on Craigslist. Here it is... http://charleston.craigslist.org/cto/1496183883.html I've sent a message to the seller and I plan to go see it soon if it is still available. Mainly I'm interested in some interior bits... anybody else interested in the whole car or parts??? Any request in the event that I make it out there? ... it's only about 45 minutes up the road from me. Nate

I have never experienced this kind of problem before. We are about the 50 degrees range in Vegas and It is very hard to start when the engine is cold. When hot, everything is OK. I have a 195 degree thermostat for winter, the carbs work fine, the ignition system is perfect, the engine is responsive without any hesitation when warmed up. These L6 engines are real cold blooded even in summer but in winter even more. I read a lot of the archives about early Zs cold starting issues and one got my attention: I have always use ATF oil in these dome carbs without any problem until now. Some posters say they use 20W in the carbs for easier start-up in cold weather. So, I need som…

If or when you detail your Z, what do you do (basically) and in what order? Many people have the idea that in detailing a car, you just go nuts on everything, and it intimidates them to the point that they just give up. There is some kind of voodoo involved that only the pros know. IMO, detailing can be broken down into manageable blocks that you do in an afternoon, or over several days or sessions, if necessary. I prefer to start on the dirtiest parts and go to the cleaner. 1- clean Engine and engine bay, treat hoses, wires 2- clean & detail interior 3- wash underbody, treat underbody & fenderwells 4- wash outer body, apply wax coating to body 5- treat …

I'll keep this as short as I can. I hope this helps someone who finds themselves in the same places that I have been. I have a '71 Z that I bought to just have some fun with. The stock brakes work good for every day driving and robust driving that does not require frequent hard stops. Trust me. When I started to get more serious about going fast I upgraded to the MSA "Big Brake" kit. The Toyota setup with vented, drilled and slotted rotors stop very well with the right pads,(Raybestos ST) but under severe treatment, they crack the rotors. Trust me. I then put more horsepower into the car and hence, I' going even faster. I finally bit the bullet and installed Wilwood…

Well, im not sure where to post this, so if I placed it wrong, I apologize. Please move to the correct forum if need be. Next week I'm hoping to go look at a Z. It's a 1976 280Z 2+2. Direct from the owner: "I prime started it and it ran great. Lady who owned it had it in storage, now its in mine. She said she drove it in in '95 and unplugged the starter. We reconnected that (it was the alternator) Said she was afraid of it being stolen from her again (key ignition etc. is all intact or have been repaired) She even removed most emblems but I have them. A few new parts go with it (All new hoses, etc.) I think she must have disconnected the fuel pumps power, or a glass/tube …

Best Z Barn Find 1 2

Most of us have picked up old Zs from barns/garages/fields/etc over the years either for parts or restoration. What was YOUR best find? Mine was a series one 1/71 car that had been off the road since 1981 and was in a garage. The owner was going to "fix it up someday". Well, someday never came and his wife had had finally had enough and wanted the car GONE. It was a rare blue with blue interior car that had the most badly rusted subframe I had ever seen on a Z (it was an upstate NY car). However it had low miles on the drivetrain and the interior was immaculate. I took it home and parted it out, still have some of the parts stored. Cost me $250.
