I can't figure out why its only getting 1.5 to the ballast resistor, everything else works engine wise.. If anyone has some wisdom on why this would happen i'd appreciate it. Also on my way home i remembered that i forgot to run a ground wire to the engine.. could something this simple be the reason why it wont fire? Also, this next one confuses me.. Brake lights work when depressed, and when the car is on both light settings. Speedo lights work when the car is on first light setting, no other gauges turn on. All gauges turn on when lights are on the second setting. Running lights work on both first and second setting, headlights do not work at all Wipers do not wo…

I have 2.1mm clearance with head gasket in place but not torqued and hand pulling valve to seat (no spring). I assume ~ 1.6 to 1.8mm clearance when torqued. Is this enough clearance between the exhaust valve and the notched block? Data: Head = Maxima N47 Block = 240z P90 Cam lift = 7.7mm Lift @ valve = 11.6mm (extrapolated @ 1.5X) Mock up measured valve lift to collision (no spring & HG not torqued): 13.7mm Just need to know so that I can wash the block and start rebuilding Thanks!

I've been looking for a S30 to build into a track car and I think I might have found one but I need some advice. It's a fairly original low rust 240Z with a seized engine that has been sitting in a garage for 15 years. Cosmetically it's a disaster but I think I can pick it up cheap, gut it and build a decent track car out of it. My only question is about potential accident damage on the front of the car. The panels on the passenger side front of the car don't seem to line up all that well and there is bondo on the rad support. You can sort of see it in the following photo... I don't see any other obvious issues with the body or frame but I am worried that an accid…

I found a oil trail down the street leading into my garage. Looked under my 240z and found a very large oil puddle coming from where the tranny and the engine meet. I believe its the rear main seal. If so do I need to remove the engine and tranny or can I just drop the tranny. I tried researching the proper steps on replacing the rear main seal but met with no luck. My Chiltons book says to remove engine.

Having some volt/ amp issues with my car. It runs and starts great but at night with the lights on the volts drop to around 11, during the day when driving around 3000 rpms the volt gauge climbs to around 15.5. I am thinking this is a regulator issue. sometime before I bought the car it had been converted to an internally regulated alternator, which I have since replaced. Wondering if the conversion was done correctly. Note only two sets of wires are jumped and the color match up looks odd.

So, working on the project 280z today, I grabbed my key and turned the lock. It immediately felt like a weird turn of the key, like the key had kind of fallen out a bit mid turn. Afterwards I realized that this key (got 6 with the car) is a bit smaller than the key I normally use. Must be an older key, or a door key or something. Oops. After the turn I was able to pull the key out easily. It goes back into the lock fully and easily too. The 'real' key doesn't really fit in the lock now, but the smaller one I used goes all the way in. Getting it to OFF though is another matter. It's stuck in ON. Cannot turn it. Had to take apart the ignition area and pull the plug to turn…

Where is this supposed to go? i can't find it in the FSM or haynes manual. its located ontop of the intake manifold, the picture below shows where its general location is.. i think its a vacuum valve? that its attached to.

Have 78 280Z. Had bad coil wire and changed it and car started great. Changed plug wire #1, car started great. From #2 onwards could not get a start. Put back old plug wirs and will start, but rough idle and noticable exhaust. Checked seating of all wires and look good. Thoughts?

I am the original owner of my 71 240Z. bought new in l971 and I have 2 manuals (Factory Service Engine (FSM) and Haynes. No dealer within 100 miles has a mechanic who knows anything about my car. I am grateful to find a source of fellow owners who may be able to help me. Ever since I rebuilt the engine, the car runs well over 20mph but the engine does not start the way it should; is not smooth taking off in 1st gear; and is a little hesitant going into 2nd gear. PROBLEMS: Before, choke would pull all the way back; now it only goes about 3/4. Seems can't adjust cable to allow choke to be pulled all the way back. Before at 50 degrees temp, I only needed to pull chok…

My 77 280z has run pretty good for a year now, ran great today till I decided it was time to do some maintenance. I parked the car at about 5:00 pm, popped the hood and inspected the distributor cap , has worn contacts, put it back on, looked at the ignition cable contacts and found bright blue residue on one, cleaned it and reinstalled, tried to start the car at 6:00 pm and it ran then died after 2 seconds, now it does not fire, I checked for spark, good, checked fuel pressure good, near around 40 psi, then a return line hose split and burst fuel, I will fix this in the morning, but I do not see why suddenly my car would not start, I cannot find anything that changed oth…
