The chat on the previous thread reminds me that I have three 240 brake boosters laying around the garage, none of which I can be sure is any good. Does anyone here have any experience with rebuilding these things? Is it a job the backyard / home handyman mechanic should be attempting. Special tools? Thanks, Richard McDonel

I'm just working on finishing up my ka transmission swap and I made a grim discovery... my slave cylinder won't fit. I fully compressed the cylinder against the fork and it doesn't reach. I am guessing this is because my clutch doesn't match my fork/bearing/sleeve/slave cylinder. I am not sure what clutch i have. It came on the engine I recently purchased. Everything except for the clutch and slave cylinder are from an early 4spd 280z. The slave cylinder is from a 73 240z. So, do I pull the engine that I just put in, swap the clutch (or sleeve) and redo it all... Or do you think I could possibly shorten the rod on the slave cylinder and or bend the fork slightly?…

I have a 77' 280, with the car running and the headlights off there is a whiny noise coming from the alternator, I can hear a slight grinding noise in the background. What's confusing me is that when I turn the headlights on the alternator goes quiet, the whiny grind noise goes away. Now, logic is telling me that it should be the exact opposite, like when I turn the headlights on the noise should be there because the headlights being on would put a load on the engine, and when I turn the lights off the noise should then go away. That's not the case... Either way, its a bad noise. Alternator is relatively new. Anybody have any ideas? RECAP: Lights on- no noise Lights…

So I drove the car to the gas station the other day. I fill up the tank and go to start the car and she won't start, it was weird since she was fine driving around the block. Anyways after trying a few times I basically emptied one float since I had no tools and the gas station didn't have any tools as well I yanked one tube open and drained it. Tried her again and she started right up, but then started making this weird winy noise. Anyways I recorded the noise, if anyone knows what this could be please let me know.

Well my car was running great and almost all at once in between times I drove it, the next time I turned the key it seemed to be back to where it was before -- running poorly as if it wasn't firing on all cylinders. If you guys remember I caught my #1 cylinder not firing and just cleaning the contacts on either end of the #1 spark plug wire, cleaning and gapping the plug and the car ran wonderfully again. For a few more drives at least. Then it was right back to running terribly again. But even worse, it was running badly and I verified that all six plugs were firing with my timing light so whatever was affecting it this time wasn't as simple as a dead cylinder. In…

What is best source for switched 12v for electric fuel pump? Mine was connected to coil but, robbed power at high rpm causing car to "cut-out". Now I have connected to battery with manual switch under dash (pain in but). I'm considering going back to mechanical pump. Is there a good power source for pump that is ignition switched?

Hello all, I am the original owner of a 1972 240Z. I am trying to refurbish my baby and have run into a problem I can't figure out. I had extensive body work done and the engine rebuilt. When I put the engine back in, the throttle shaft from the intake manifold to the firewall bracket does not line up. I used both new engine mounts and the old mounts and the shaft has the same displacement. I put a new transmission bushing in. I thought the tranny might be the problem but in order to lower the back of the engine enough to get the throttle shaft to line up the transmission lays down on the crossmember with no room for any bushing. I have rebuilt the intake manifold …

i decided to build and l28 that had a spun main bearing, tore the engine down and found that the number five main was spun and fused to the crank. decided to swap an l24 crank in. built the engine and got it to fire today, the timing was off and had some bad backfire. set the timing and let it idle, sounded good at idle speed. when i whent to give it some gas, at around 3rpm it started to knock really bad. sounded like a rocker. i took the valve cover off and set the lash. still dint fix the problem, i did notice that the timing chain was very tight, and was showing shining on the out side of the chain. when i was turning the cam to adjust lash the cam would have some pla…

Hey guys, First off i'd like to say i'm a complete newbie with the z-cars. I've never worked on such a presitge car before. The earliest car i've worked on is a 1990 Honda CRX which is my current baby. Might have to move over for a 240z though!!! So i'm asking for some help here. This car has been sitting for 15 years and has never been run in that time. The body looks pretty damn mint. I looked underneath and hardly any rust except for the exhaust. Which I don't really give two $h!ts about. My question is... Do any of you know any Canadian (hopefully in Ontario) places that sell parts for this car?? I'm pretty much looking for engine parts. I might try and rip…

Hey guys and gals I really need some help. I got into a light acciden the other day and my hood is kaput. I've searched just about every site posted on here and can't find A series 1 hood (1970-1976)anywhere. All new ones are NLA right now from all the major suppliers (MSA blackdragon zbarn etc... And nobody a has them in stock even though they are still listed in some of their catalogs/inventories. MSA has the fiberglas ones but that's an 8 week back order) and the other modified ones are either too expensive or too far from stock visually. I'm at my wits end here I have even been junkyard diving for the past few weeks and nothing in my area has one. If anybody has …

Newbie needs help! Weird things started happening to my Z and before I go to the mechanic, maybe I can get some info from the forum. I'm a newbie, so please be patient with me. I've already done the search thing but it's still not clear to my dense, uneducated brain. First, the car: A 1973 but with '72 round-tops and the emissions stuff removed and holes plugged. 3-speed automatic. Last visit to the Z mechanic was about 2 months ago. The car is a daily driver. Now the problem: I recently noticed some intermittent hesitation and stuttering when accelerating, so I thought some kind of fuel delivery problem. Extremely strong smell of gas. Then the idle would vary wildly in n…

hello, i have a 1972 datsun 240z, and i noticed on the on position i hear the fuel pump engage and run, but it constantly runs, i was wondering is this normal? shouldn't it shut off, i left it on the on position for a long time without starting it, just to see if it eventually shuts off, but after about 20 minutes i still hear it running
