So over the last few months ive had some new parts starting to pile up including new floor pans. I know there are some rust issues with the car so i have been contemplating having it blasted down to metal and having it primed so i get get a good solid base to do the body work on. To do this i would like to strip the car down to a the shell myself to save a few bucks on labor time. I have done a search but i cant seem to find any "how to"s on pulling an engine. Is there anyone that could point me to / write up a quick checklist of what has to be unscrewed. I'm mostly concerned about forgetting something from the transmission back and breaking it trying to pull it out. Th…

I was looking through the FSM earlier and realized my 72 doesnt have a hood safety latch. After searching around a bit I have seen that it is apparently important to have one even if it does open opposite of most hoods. There are a couple of 280zx's in the local pull apart. Does anyone know if they use a compatible latch? Or if not, does anyone have one the are willing to part with? Thanks

Trying for a Thanksgiving Day 1st start on my new-to-me and not-started-in-20 years 240z. I have it all fluid changed etc etc... It cranks fine. It "starts" with starting fluid. Problem: I have fuel to the carb area.... I know this because I am getting fuel flowing out of 2 ports into the air cleaner assembly... but ut's not starting. I understand that I might still have electrical/ignition issues. I istalled a Pertronix unit and do not KNOW that it is working properly. But my concern at the moment is this fuel issue. What's going on here? THANKS, Mark

Hello all I'm in need of some help with my 1976 280z. I went for a fairly long drive today (~25miles or so) to the local u-pull it junkyard and the store to pick up groceries. When I got in my car all was find but when I put it in gear and started backing up I get a fairly loud squeeking noise that sounds like it is coming from the rear. It grows louder and faster with the speed of the car. As the car nears 50 the rear begins to "roar" is the best way to put it. My u-joints are not in very good shape at all so could it be them? Half-shafts? Advise is welcome Thanks Jan

Well first off, I feel kinda bad posting in this section because it doesnt require immediate attention, its just a question so sorry if this is the wrong section.. I was wondering if anyone knows the engine bay dimesions of a Datsun 280z, I've been trying to find it on the internet but I just keep finding useless crap. I am wondering because I wanted to drop a VK56DE engine from an 06' Nissan Armada into it. Which brings me to my next question, if neither of the above are answered, does anyone know the size of a VK56DE engine? Also, I was wondering what transmission to use, since VK56DE dont come with manual. would a VG series or 350z tranny with custom adapter plate w…

Hi, I will be installing a Tokiko spring kit with Lumina adjustable shocks. This will lower the car. Is it necessary to have adjustable control arm bushings on a lowered Z? I have a polyurethane bushing kit for the whole car. Thanks, Mike

Purchase 280Z that sat 10 years. Replace the fuel pump and fuel filter. Have fuel up to the fuel rail but won't start. Seems that the fuel system pressures up so much that the fuel pump seems to squeal. Does anyone have any ideas?

So I was looking around the underbody of my Z and was pulling back some of the gunk on the body to see what was underneath (I was hoping to rule out heavy rust damage, or any damage). Underneath one particularly hard to remove piece of rubbery stuff, I found this...(picture)...I don't know what this part is called, it is right underneath the passenger floor pan. I apologize for the poor picture quality, but The picture is showing a whole going right to the inside of the car. The black part you see in the whole, is my carpet! Im not really sure what to do with this or how bad it is. I thought putting it up here might be a wise choice. Any suggestions would very appreciate…

I am having a reoccuring problem with my speedo cable. It keeps breaking at the pinion gear (tranny mount). I have a 1979 280zx with the 2pc cable setup. One cable, about 1 foot in length, goes from the rear of the instrument cluster to the firewall, where it is connected to another cable. It is the longer of the two that keeps breaking, but I think the problem lies in the cluster. Here is why. 1. when it works, there is a rattleing sound from the dash. 2. the trip odometer is VERY hard to reset. 3. When the cable invariably snaps (at the pinion), you can hear the cable unwind. (by unwind, I mean unravel-like a spring releasing tension) I think that if I were to pull the …

I have had this problem with one of my 77 280z's for over a year now and no one seems to know what is wrong! I have posted a lot about it on a local zcar group, and on hybridz and no luck fixing the issue. Here is a summary of the problem and what I have tried to resolve it. Under very light load, the car will jerk violently as if there is a huge amount of drive train slop, at first it was just slightly, but its gotten so bad I'm afraid to drive it. I can get it to happen in reverse, all gears, but not under acceleration or in neutral/clutch disengaged. A typical time of it happening is your cruising in 3rd/4th and you come to a stoplight and hit the brake, and as your…

Hi, guys. It's been a long time, but I need some more advice. I think I already know the problem, but I need to confirm it before I go tearing into my Z. First of all, the Z has been running better and better. I now get full RPM range when I want it, and the majority of the power I've been missing seems to be coming back. I think that whatever funk was left in the fuel lines or the gas tank has finally flushed out of the system. That, and I started getting gas at the slightly more expensive gas stations. I had my radiator cleaned and I replaced the water pump a few months ago because I was having cooling issues, but I realized it was because of a different problem…
