First, I want to introduce myself to you guys. My name is David from College Station, TX. I bought a 73 240 about 6 months and decided to start a new hobby. I've been lurking in the background for about a month or so up until now. I've learned a lot reading the various posts on the site - it's been very helpful, thanks! I'm learning as I go and I've hit my first (of many, I'm sure) bump in the road. I'm having difficulty figuring out how the rear hatch strut is attached to the car. It was missing from the car when I bought it. I've bought a replacement (attached) but cannot figure out how to attach it. I've read earlier posts, but I'm still lost. Seems like I n…

I had a L28E head reworked and the machinest cut the head to much,he said he did not. I took it to another shop, they said it was cut .30 it seems to be to much. They said i could use it if i could find a spacer. Does any one know where i can find one of these? THE FIRST MACHINEST SAID I DID SOMETHING WRONG. But i know i didnt ,Itried everthing i knew and nothing worked, I checked compression it was way off, I checked the timing it was right on,so ipulled it off put the old head on and it works fine. The second shop said they would not go any more than .15 on the spacer. And also does any one know how much you can mill off of a stock head?

Hey, everyone, I just got my first Z - a 1980 280zx. I'm very happy, even though it needs a lot of work. It ran great when I drove it home 2 days ago, and it seemed cold natured, but after it warmed up it was very smooth. Now, all of a sudden, it won't rev past 2250 rpm. When it hits 2250, it bogs down until the revs drop to about 1500, then back to normal. It does this in every gear, under load or not. I'm super frustrated and just looking for some input. I changed the fuel filter, revved it w/o an air cleaner, nothing helps. Any ideas? Thanks!

Just a quick question concerning removing my timing cover. I have fallen victim to the rookie mistake of a poorly wedged tensioner, and it has popped out. So I'm taking the timing cover off. Should I be concerned with draining the oil first? Does the oil level sit above the bottom of the timing cover. I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I am new to working on Z cars and dont want to have oil spilling all over the place, and would rather not have to drain the oil just to get my timing set. I appreciate your responses -Adam

hey all, got a problem shifting into second gear.. it grinds going in from 1st, or downshifting from 3rd. it always felt like there wasnt enough throw in the hydraulic system to disengauge the clutch fully... well, I pulled the transmission(1981 280ZX 5speed non turbo) to take a look see. and I found that a few of my pressure plate bolts had come loose (I have a centerforce 2 clutch)..about 3-4 turns to snug. It made me think that maybe because of this, my clutch was draging a bit, especially with those centrifical weights.. well, I tightened everything back up, but the transmission back on, replaced the master and slave cylinder, bled the system, I have the right year …

Hey folks, I finally talked my neighboor into buying his first 240z. He just called me to come check on a strong gas smell in his garage and as I entered you could smell gas, almost like someone poured some on the garage floor. After we inspected the car the smell is coming from the engine compartment somewhere, we both are by no means mechanics and I suggested he take the car in on Monday. But I did notice some small drops on the floor, and was thinking could this be something as simple as a fuel line, etc. Where could two "Novice" mechanics start troubleshooting this smell? Is there a recommended guide to follow? Any help would be appreaciated. His car is 73 model…

Hi, I tore my head off today to get it machined. Looking at the pistons I noticed something. They are all marked with "F2" on the top, except for one, which is marked with "F3". Does this mean anything? Thanks, Adam

k... 76 280z fuel injected... turns over and actually starts for about 2-3 sec. and then dies. dont know the technical term but its backfireing out the intake (think that means its lean???) however i have checked the fuel pressure and there is tons going to the engine. the tank has been cleaned, new fuel pump, filter, and injectors, and did a tune up with new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, just 2 days ago. the dang thing ran fine to the store, and when i came out as soon as i turned the key it started doing this just literally at the drop of a hat and now its stuck there....could it possibly the distributor?? i checked all the fuses, and such and there is nothing diffe…

I know it is advisable to sand between coats with solid colours and the clear laquer but does this apply for pearlesant paints as well. I have heard and read that some people do not sand metallic paints but only sand the clear lacquer. I have just resprayed my car with a Green Mica but am not sure when to sand. Do I sand the paint back now before I apply the final coat of green?
