Well, figuring the thermostat hasn't been changed since my '78 280Z left the factory decades ago (and it hadn't), I took the task of pulling off the 30 min quick job...which has now turned into a multi-day project (since it's now parked/stuck at my buddies apartment instead of my driveway). My problem: I took the upper part of the housing off after snapping one of the bolts (closest to the head) off. Other one was rusty as all hell, but I babied her out fine. So, I get the cover off and pull the thermostat, clean off the old gasket, yada yada, and then to the task of extracting the remainder of the other bolt. Well...I'm still on that task... after PB Blaster, vice grip…

I just purchased my 73 240 Z. My boyfriend asked me to post this and I hope someone can make heads or tails with this information cause I really want to drive her. When I turn on the headlights(engine off) all I have are highbeams. Sometimes I can get the lowbeams to come on but they are dim. When this does happen I can turn the light switch off and they stay on until I shut off the ignition switch. I have replaced the combination switch and it did the same thing. Just to be sure they were good I did a continuity test. As shown in my 1975 Z Factory Service Manual they were both good. I did voltage tests at the bulb connection. The battery read 11.95with the lights on one …

Ok I purchased my 75 280z over the summer, I mostly use it for Z meets/shows, occasionally take it out on the weekend for a cruise. The problem im having is it seems to be using about a quart of oil every 300-400miles. It doesn't smoke at all, does not leak at all, so what else might be going here? Anyone have similar issues in the past? My 280z has 110K on it, I use 10W30 valvoline, should I maybe switch to high mileage oil? I've put 1k on it since this summer and today found it almost a quart low after adding a quart 150 miles ago, I took to a meet 1hr away and lost almost 1quart from that drive. Some people tell me its 30yrs old and to be happy that losing oil is my o…

I am trying to buy a used dash to send off to have restored for a 70Z. I know about the hole for the lighter and indent for the flasher on/off, but I have heard only a 70 model will fit because it is 1 1/2 inches smaller than a 71 model. I have been told there is no difference in a 70 to 73 except for the holes. I want to make sure before I spend all that money and get it wrong.

Well, it started one night when we were trying to figure out why i had a huge clunk when i shifted hard, we where taking a corner pretty hard and the car stalled out. I could smell burning wires, and saw some smoke come frome the cowl area. The car wouldnt even start untill a pal of mine came over and we replaced the fusible links and some wiring to the fuel pump. I also bought a new fuel pump relay. So, the car starts just fine, but the really f-ed up part is, when ever i take a corner i can hear click click click, my relays going on and off, and the car begins to stall again, and jerks back and forth like crazy....but the second i straighten her out, she flies just fine…

My car ran well enough before I tried to adjust the carbs to make it run better. :stupid: Now, it's starting to rain and there's no light to finish learning to work w/ the carbs in the evenings. Is there a decent shop around here where I can go and get things put back to normal? Thanks, --Dan

I'm about to buy a 1971 Series I 240Z out of state. It looks in great shape, but the mechanic looking at it can't find the engine numbers to confirm it's the original engine. He found the number on strut tower, but can't seem to find the number on the engine block. I had been told that the number is "where the block and the head meet near the trasnmission and on the passengers side," but my mechanic still can't seem to find it. Is the number somewhere else? Engraved on a plate or directly into the engine? Is it possibly obscured by something? Please provide as detailed a description as possible so I can help my mechanic find the number..... I'm really grateful for y…

Hey I was wondering what pre-ignition smells like. I seem to get a slight pinging around 3k or so, and my timing is about 10 degrees BTDC. After driving for awhile I get a smell in the car like when you weld or grind metal. Is that the smell of pre-ignition? Thanks guys Chris

Hey everyone- Newbie here with a big problem. I have a 1976 280Z that has a 'flat spot' when hitting the gas when the engine is cold, accompanied by back fires through the throttle body. I just had my mechanic replace the cold start valve, clean out the throttle body, clean out the mass air meter, and clean off the spark plugs. When the car warms up, it runs like a champ! Please someone help meeeeeeee!! I want to get back to driving my Z!!!!! Thanks! later! Sean
