My '72Z's fuel return pipe is closed. So I tried to open it with a wire. That thin wire broke inside the tube and now I'm at the end of my wisdom. Question 1: What will happen to my driving with a closed fuel return pipe, are there any dangers like SU carb overflow and fuel dropping out and on the hot exhaust or too rich mixture or ... ? Question 2: Any ideas what to do? The possibility to get a tube at a wreckyard is near to 0 here. Question 3: Is it an easy job to take off that tube from the rear (tank) and to work from that end and is there anything to take care of, like valves for instance ? Thanks in advance Rolf

Ok, the new Z has been sitting for 13 years. (Garaged) I drained the gas, all that i could, and even shot a screwdriver through the drain hole to dislodge and gunk that might have stopped up the hole. However, to my surprise, the tank still seemed to be holding another quart or two of gunky liquid in a section of the tank that would not drain. So, I dropped the tank and poured the gunk out the fill tube. I think the liquid was trapped in the top. Some REALLY nasty looking stuff came out. THen...I washed the tank out, best I could. When looking in the fill hole with a flashlight, I was surprised that that cavity seemed baffled from the rest of the tank. I co…

Just got back from the gas tank repair shop . They said my tank was to far gone to clean it and reline the inside. If true I have to try and get a gas tank from some where. Any hints where I can get one would be appreciated. It seems like I make two steps forward and then one back. Getting to old for this. Thanks Al Squillante

New '72 240Z owner trying to get it safety inspected. Recently "rebuilt". The state inspection guys tell me I don't have a smog canister(???) I have never heard or seen anything about a smog canister. Courtesy Nissan knows what it is....$360!!!! Fill me in guys and tell where I can get one for cheap. How does it connect? Oh yeah..L28 block, E88 head, 280 electronic ign, '71 SU carbs, stock airfilter.

I was wondering if there is a diagram of the fuel system for the 240. I have a haynes manual and it only shows the 260. Does the 240 also have an electric fuel pump near the tank? I just bought a 1971 240 and there seem to be a problem with fuel making it to the carbs. I checked the mechanical pump and it seems to be working. I manually tried to suck some fuel to the filter by sucking on the hose that goes from the filter into the pump but only a few drops of fuel made it into the filter. Is this normal or should I be able to fill the filter up if I manually try to fill it? I think I may have either a clogged line or something. I was just hoping to find a diagram …

I know I have seen some discussions on the replacement of the vent hose to the fuel tank. I can't find them in the threads. There was a discussion of using standard vent hose and stainless tubing for the curves. Any advie for replacement hoses or originals would be appreciated/ Al

I have two sets of SU carbs, one 3 screw, one four screw. The three screws are what I have on the engine currently and they run just great. I polished and rebuilt the 4 screws to put on and just tried to tune them. However the idle adj screw is screwed in all the way and the car is still running extremely rich (the sparkplugs are black). The only idea I have is that I have the wrong needles in the carbs. The rebuild kit I got is made by Beck Arnley World Parts (from a good auto store, not kragen) and it came with two sets of needles. The only differences I see on them is that two are marked with HWJ1 and the other two HWJ2. I've read many posts on how to tune these…

Hello, I bought a '72 240 a couple of weeks ago (I also have a '90 300zx) and I've been reading up on everything I can get my hands on. Anyways I noticed the other night that it stumbles a bit on acceleration under 2k rpm's (but not through the rest of the power band) and I could tell it was running very rich. I pulled the plugs today and saw that cyl. 1-2-3 plugs were very fouled with carbon while cyl. 4-5-6 plugs looked very clean. I've read a lot of threads about tuning the SU carbs and I was wondering if I needed to completely tune both carbs or can I just adjust the front carb to keep it from running too rich. Any help is appreciated.

Hello all, just got my 300ZX lsd R200. I know I need to swap a few things from my stock R200, but was wondering, before I dive into it, how easy is it to change the input flanges from the "cv" type to the "u-joint" type? Is there a clip that holds them in, or do they just pop out??? I have heard the swapping the flange that bolts to your drive shaft yoke is a little more difficult. Is this something that needs to be done at a shop?
