I'm starting a renewal project on my 76 280Z. I'm considering having my engine rebuilt and modified. I'd like advice on building a civilized performance engine. I looking for a shop that is experienced in zcar performance engines and hopefully located in southern Michigan area (I live in Battle Creek.) My car is sound bodywise, needs new suspension (may need help her also) and has been in storage for about 14 years. I've owned it since 1978, drove it every summer until 1988. been in storage since. Car has lowered suspension, urethane bushings etc., handles like its on rails but engine was getting a little tired when last put up. I taking the gas tank out this weekend t…

Hello, well i was drvin down the hwy. and just before i reached my destination i looked at the gauge that mesures the amps. The headlights were on the wipers and the radio, it was raining, so i noticed it was in the negative so i turned th radio off, didn't change anything, turned the lights off then it just went to the middle where it wasn't on the negative or the positive. So i thought damit, I should head back home so i am not stuck 50 miles from home so i did so, i get back and while the car was running i took the negative cable off, and it was still running so that should mean that the laternator is running, No? anyways can someone tell me what's up with this please.

I admit it. I am slowly coming up to speed on my 71 240, which has been parked for 14 years or so. Anyway, I have pulled the spark plugs and disconnected the coil. Put some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders. Let sit for a week. Now want to rotate engine by hand to see if it has seized. My spitfire has a bolt on the front of the crank. How do I rotate the Z engine by hand? The fan obviously spins freely. Also if I can rotate it, I presume counterclockwise as looking at the front of the engine is the way to go? Sorry I am a dufus.

Well now the 260's nearly all apart, i need to remove the engine and gearbox before if push it on its side to remove the last little bits. Is it easier to lift the engine out through the top, or can i just lower it onto the ground with the car on stands and wheel it away? (Tried both ways in different cars, and going through the bottom was a heap easier and quicker and it didn't scare me as much) Can anyone see any reasons why it may not be possible?

i just got a datsun 280z from a friend, it had been sitting for a few months and i guess it just needed a battery and the clutch needed to be bled. i got it running and drove it home, the engine ran nice and smooth. i had been taking it out every other day or so, just driving around the block, and like the 4th or 5th time i drove it it just stalled.. now whenever i start it it feels like its missing or something, i pulled the spark plugs and they are all coated in oil. does this mean i need to rebuild my engine?? i mean, it ran fine before, when i drove it home. i havent changed the oil or anything. the only thing i did to the car since i got it was put a new batte…

Last night on my 72 240z I thought my coil went bad. After sitting for about a half hour last night it wouldn't start up again. I towed it home and looked it over. It wasn't getting any spark at the plugs, so I checked the coil wire. Won't jump harldy any gap, couldn't even see a visable spark unless it was touching the block. So I checked power to it. Oddly, it had 12 volts at the negative end, and nothing at the positive end. So I bought a new coil this morning, put it on, wired up just like the old one, and still no starting. I need 2 people to check spark, so I can't check it yet, but I did check power. Were back to haveing 12 volts on the positive side of the coil an…

I got the tank off o.k. (will be different putting it back on!) and will get it refinnished. Is there anything else under there I should look at connected to the tank? Replace hoses, etc? My gas gage does not work. I pulled the float thingy and checked the wires and contacts; everything looked o.k. Could there be something here that causes the gage to not work? I also pulled the fill plug on the differential to check fluid level. I have tried this before but it is very difficult with the tank on. Fluid came out of the hole very much like water. Does this seem like the correct fluid weight? The fluid was sort of cloudy like there might be water or air in it.
