My '72 seems to have lost power over the last few months. Today I noticed moisture being vented out the top of the valve cover. Other symtoms include backfiring through both carbs upon acceleration, though the engine seems to idle fine. I've checked the dipstick after the car has been run for foaming, and find none. I'm baffled and am wondering if a compression test on each cylinder will verify a blown head gasket. Any thoughts?

I have a 1973 240z that I pulled out of a barn 2 years ago. I have no time to work on it anymore. Does anybody know of a good mechanic who is good with these cars in the Metro Detroit MI area. I live in Westland but will consider all help. the dealers have oil changers. It seems diagnostic techs are far and few between. After a head job I have no power, black smoke, and poor runability, the car is basically unusable. Thanks, Dave

I have a 1970 240Z that has gone through two ignition switches in the past year. The second one was not genuine Nissan so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. One local mechanic said I had a hot wire grounded. However, that cannot possibly be the case(I don't think) because the battery doesn't discharge. Also, there is a terrible noise coming from the rear end that increases with engine speed and it sounds so bad that it gives the impression it is about to go at any moment. I thought for sure it must not have any oil in it so I checked it and sure enough, it had the recommended amount in it. Therefore, I am baffled once again as to why it makes such loud and t…

Looks like I have a leaking master vac. Have lost all power boost to the brakes (brakes themselves are OK.) I hear a noticable hiss upon depressing brake pedal (and for some reason, engine speed increases about 500RPM). When I disconnected the vaccuum hose from manifold to the master vac, the sound disappeared. There's not much info in the Chilton manual I have about the master vac. Is is worthwhile rebuilding it? Are bebuilt ones available. How difficult is it to remove? I can see a real problem working in the tight space under the steering wheel. I'm wondering if it's best to hire this out. Any comments appreciated. Jon thebigboy@earthlink.net

Is the linkage pole (for lack of a better term) next to the firewall that holds the gismo that turns the rest of the linkage rods shorter on a '73 than the '70-'72 models? Or has some idiot simply hacksawed mine? Difficult to tell. I am trying to hook up the original linkage and having alot of diffculty. Any linkage photos out there? Please? ------------------ "Go into emptiness, strike voids, bypass his defences; hit him where he does not expect you" -Lao Tzu

Got a brake problem, probably vaccuum. '72 240Z Brakes work OK--plenty of pedal. But all braking power assist is gone. When pressing brake pedal, I notice an low hiss (like a leaking air hose) under the dash and the RPM kicks up by 1000 RPM. Opened hood and noticed liquid (brake fluid?) just below the master vac brake cylinder. Has anyone had this problem? Trouble shooting section of manual says nothing about the increase in RPM. I'm guessing I'll have to replace the master vac, but will await any suggestions from this illustrious group. Thanks Jon thebigboy@earthlink.net

I know I posted this in the Carb section already but help is needed. I am putting my L28 from a '81 into my '73 240Z. It uses the P79 head and will be using the early round top SU carbs. I need to go with an electric pump. I need to know: Which pump; Brand, psi, gallons per hour. And do I simply regulate the line under the hood well before the carbs, or do I double regulate right before before the carbs at the "T", thereby leaving the system unhindered and avoiding possible vapor-lock? ------------------ "Go into emptiness, strike voids, bypass his defences; hit him where he does not expect you" -Lao Tzu

No emergency, but a request for info.... Stock '72 engine w/ stock SUs. Engine warmed. At idle, the RPM has a tendency to waiver in cycles a few hundred RPM--say 900, down to 700, then back up to 900. I used a tee connector and checked the fuel flow from from the fuel pump, which seems to be adequate. It SOUNDS like a problem with a carb float but I'm not sure. (carbs were overhauled about 5 years ago.). So I thought I would post this here as I'm sure someone with more expertise than I has experienced this in the past. Any suggestions for a fix?

I'm lacking one thing for inspection after a 2 year rebuild. Headlights! They work if I apply 12V to the fuses in the box but will not work with the switch. The parking lights and every other component work fine. Is there a relay that I,m missing somewhere. I have a factory manual and also several others but they are hard to trace with my eyesight.By the way it is a 73 4-speed
