Ok I need help it seems my gas gauge is now not working correctly as it is almost always sitting on empty but when I try to fill it the gas spews out of the tank. Mostly my concern is the fact that when I open my gas tank there is so much pressure being released and I have no idea what is causing it. The car runs and drives fine but the pressure and the gauge are worrying me. I also just replaced the original gas cap with a locking ventilating one from the parts store. 77' Datsun 280 just bought the car, looks stock to me no mods on the car

Hi all, I would like to get conformation on some dates and designation for the Z. I am looking at the US market only. And skipping the 260 designation if different. I have a 1976 280Z non calif, with a 5spd (one of the previous owners must have installed the trans as 1976 did not come with 5spd). I noticed the wires on my vacuum switching valve were completely toast and I cant find a replacement part anywhere. To my knowledge the vacuum switching valve adjusts timing for 4th gear. Yet since I have a 5spd, is this switch even necessary? Does the trans have a top gear switch that tells the vacuum switch to engage past 4th? I took it apart and can attempt to clean and resolder the connection if its still needed. The car has only idled in the driveway since I bought it in the fall so I have no idea how it behaves while running thro…

Hi all, I have what should be a simple problem to fix. First: Starter is new, less than 1 year old. Battery is also new and charged. (Starter included solenoid) When I go to start the car, turn the key, I get the "clicking" sound, starter does not engage. Volts are fine both at gauge and at battery with multimeter. I turn the key over a dozen or so times, and it finally engages the starter and starts fine. Starter and battery have no problem when finally engaged. Is this some kind of starter relay or switch? Definitely sounds like something electrical. Any help is appreciated, this is about the "last" thing I want to address before starting…

Update: Just want to thank everyone who has replied. I haven't fixed the problem but its great to hear other peoples opinions and suggestions! So i just want to start off by saying I am in no way an experienced mechanic. I am having a problem with my 1977 Datsun 280z and am willing to hear anyone's thoughts. So I haven't driven this car much. i bought it and it had a leak in the exhaust manifold. Since i had to take it all off i decided to buy headers. While removing the EGR tube, the tube was damaged so I decided to remove the EGR. I remove the EGR use a block off plate from a Z store. I capped off the vacuum that leads to the egr. Now for the problem. W…

Hi all - I noticed when i bought my Z three months ago it was tough to shift into 5th gear... either the gear was hard to find, or the shift once the gear engaged was a little rough. I thought this was due to sloppy shifter pin and bushings - I've bought new but yet to replace (need some special tools to knock old bushings out and press new in). A couple weeks ago, I shifted into 5th and went to release the clutch and it popped the shifter back into neutral. Since then, I can shift into 5th at lower speeds and RPM's, but not during hard acceleration. same result, pops the shifter back into my hand and into neutral. Is it a synchro issue? Or could i…

I have no clue where these go or where they connect. I rewired the other vacuum hoses in the right spot but I'm stuck with these last two. Sent from my iPad using Classic Zcar Club mobile

Hi all, I've just upgraded to the later E12-80 distributor in my 1972 240z and now the car won't start. Only backfires. Im looking for someone who could come to me here in the valley to help with checking I've wired the new distributor in correctly and to check and adjust the timing for me. Any local members here who can wield a stroboscope? Cheers

Year/Model: 1978 280z I recently changed the original fuel pump to a compatible Airtex model. Before the work was done i had power to the fuel pump. After the install i went to start the car and I'm getting no power to the pump. I've chased wire from the pump, up behind the passenger seat, all the way to the fusible link and the battery. I'm thinking the issue MIGHT be the fuel pump relay. Is there any way that it could have been damaged in the process of changing the fuel pump? The first thing i did was disconnect the fuel pump relay and crank the engine to eliminate fuel in the lines. I then disconnected the negative terminal of the battery before any work was…

Cleaned the valve cover after my first adjustment and see a type of glue holding the baffle in place. It appears to be cracking and a pro said I need to chip it out to avoid pieces falling into the engine and possibly clogging the oil screen. three questions what say you about removing it . Yes or no how would you remove it does it need to be replaced thanks in advance

Could use some guidence, first the car, stock '72 240 (11/71production) and I just finished replacing shocks. Problem, somehow I seem to have changed the left side wheel placement. When I turn the drivers side wheel far right the front edge of the tire now comes in contact with the front stock valence right behind the turn signal even with no load, no one sitting in drivers seat. The shocks are Stagg (I found out too late these do not have very good reviews) but I have my doubts the shock is creating the problem. I did have to completely remove the strut assembly from the car so the sway bar end link and tension bar connections to the control arm were removed along with t…
