i step on the accelerator sometimes and then my car barely moves and the exhaust makes a really bad sputtering sound. then all of a sudden it sometimes just kicks in and goes. i recently just had my carbs adjusted and balanced so i'm wondering if it's rust or stuff from my fuel tank that's plugging my carbs up. this problem comes and goes often enough to annoy me. anyone know what i'm talking about?

My new (to me) 73 240z behaves badly at idle and low speeds. It feels like a plug or two is fouled and missing. However, when I put my foot in it, things get better as if the fouled plugs clear themselves. Checks on the ignition system appear to show that things are normal, and there's no signs of obvious fouling on the plugs. So, I begin to wonder if it's carburation. Details: 1973 240Z, Automatic. Dual point distributor, Dual 32/36 Weber DGVs, EGR intact but air pump belt is off. It's been a number of years since I did serious engine work and I seem to have forgotten my diagnosis skills. Point me in the right direction? Thanks, -Jim Kirkpatrick Walnut Creek, CA

I recently acquired a 72 240Z. In may attempts to get it running, I have noticed a coolant leak coming from the intake manifold area. It is an E88 intake. By putting a mirror under it, the leak seems to be coming from what looks like one of two freeze plugs under the intake port for the front carb. My question is three-fold. Am I correct in assuming that these indentations are freeze plugs and if so can they be replaced and how difficult? The manifold may just be cast that way but they sure look like freeze plugs. I have checked the coolant lines and fittings going into this intake and they are dry. Thank you in advance.

What is the actual amount of oil that goes into a flattop carb? I didn't see any specs in the manual other than type of oil(20w). Maybe I missed it somewhere. Thanks, Victor.

Anyone know how to get a killer shine from your L series Engine? I've seen many great looking engine bays with polished up mirror like SU carbs and Valve covers that make me very jealous. Alot of people talk about using different grades of sand paper to get these that way but I'm not 100% on the procedure so i'm wondering what advice and things I can do to get a great shine from my engine. I have a spare set of British SU's I can practice on so I'm not fussed too much about making them look bad if something doesn't work out. I ask because I'm looking at a very sexy set for sale and considering buying. :classic:

Ok, my new Z does not like to idle and I suspect that the carbs may not be adjusted quite right. Is this an easy thing to adjust or must you be a carb expert? I have a mostly '71 with round tops and a header (the only non-stock part I know of).

I just bought a beautifull set of 40 Mikuni PHH's, manifold and K&N "box" stlye filters. The manifold has "Mikuni" cast into the mounting flange. On the other hand I've got a perfect set of SU's, restored by Z therapy, polished manifold, all replated hardware and a restored air filter with the K&N element. Which one to install? Eeney, meneey. mineey mo, tell me which one that should go,.....

I remember reading somewhere that the L series engines did not run so well on down draft carbs. Yes many people has Webber DGVs which are down drafts and the car runs very well. The SUs are side draft and that's what came stock on the car so maybe Datsun knew this when the cars were build. Is there really one that is type that is best for these engines? Is there one carb that is considered to be the best for the Z cars? Or does it really make any difference as long as what ever is on the car is properly sized and tuned?

Hey all, thanks for reading. I have a 100% stock 10/71 '72 240z, only mod on motor right now is the smog belt is off. (and froze subsequently since). I see everyone with all smog stuff off, and was wondering what books if any are recommended for making a Z real clean lookin the carb area, with all the smog items removed. I already have no water going through the manifold. Any and all recommendations would be appreciated. Heres some rambling: 1. All the stuff that goes to the smog pump, can all of that just be removed, and the holes in the manifold, etc. be capped? I am going from the stock orange air filter housing to 2 k&n style filters, with no coolant going throu…
