Carburetor Central

If you have questions about the SU Carburetors, this is where you can find the answers.

  1. Started by SuDZ,

I was just curious what the point of the coolant lines were on the carbs. I have not seen them before, but only dealt with down draft carbs in the past. Is this to keep them cool from the exhaust manifold right below? On another not many of the coolant lines on my carbs are cracked or leaking. Can I just replace these with regular coolant hoses or do I need to protect them somehow for the heat? SuDZ

It's fun watching the wideband guage as the weather changes. Here in Indiana we just went from super hot and humid to 65 and no humidity and I watched her run lean. I have always kept it on the lean side, but WOW she really went lean this week. I fattened her up a good half a turn on the mixture nuts and boom -baby, it was a different engine. This to me is all the justification I need for all the work I'm putting in on my CAI for my Mikunis.

I am helping my retired neighbor with his project which is now in the assembly stage and rounding up some of the missing parts. The car is a 1/71 build date. Vin is 19270. His goal is to keep it all stock. Are the correct carbs the 3 screw or 4 screw version? I don't know how early the transition was.

I installed the new 240 fuel rail this week . now at the start of the fuel rail my fuel pressure is 3.9 psi . so I checked at the rear carb and the fuel pressure is 3.6 psi . is the fuel pressure to high for the 4 bold carbs? thanks

  5. Finally i managed to replace the Far 311 Race Cam with the following smoother cam manufactured by Schneider: http://schneidercams.com/274FL6.aspx I also changed the springs, .175 lash pads, retainers and rocker arms (the full kit). In addition to this my carbs were recently remanufactured by Z therapy in order to avoid any issues. I plan on installing an AC system so using a cam that went from 4500 to 8500 wouldnt work. Anyway, i just tested the car yesterday, and have a couple of queries on its performance: 1. The choke cable when pulled only reaches 1,500 RPM at idle. Is this okay or should it be adjusted to 3,000 RPM when pulled? With the Far 311 Race Cam i man…

I searched the forums and couldn't find answers to these questions. Thanks for any help/info etc. Ok what does the balance tube on the intake manifold do? Does it simply equalize the pressure between the 2 intakes? Is there some adjustability there? Anything else? Any idea what happens if you block it off? Second thing, anyone know how intake gas temperature affects HP, fuel economy or any other engine "metrics"? If you're going for HP is cool gas better? I know later models piped heat into the intake radiated either from the exhaust or through the air filter. Was this just for emissions reasons? Thanks again michael

  7. Hi folks, I am a new Z owner (1972), and looking forward to refreshing/restoring this beautiful car. She currently runs OK, but could be better. I am, by no means, a great mechanic, but it appears that there are plenty of helpful folks in this forum. One of the previous owners of this car installed a CR PRO/FUEL adjustable pressure regulator downstream of the fuel pump, prior to the carbs. It is set on 4.5 (I assume this means 4.5 psi). I am not sure of the need for this fuel pressure regulator. I have read many complimentary comments on Z-Therapy's work in refurbishing the dual SUs, so I am planning to take that route. If the carbs are rebuilt/balanced, have any of…

I have installed triple webers and am looking for ideas as to what to do with the crankcase breather? No room to plumb to air cleaners. Any suggestions? Thanks

  9. Started by overdrivex,

ok i searched and i mostly found were question and answers on what people thought about them. all honesty i might already know the answer, but my lack of knowledge on carbs wont allow me to believe its correct. i made a vid instead of trying to type out a long confusing description. http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/overdrivex/?action=view&current=b08816d4.pbr just dont seem right..my best guess is the rod that everything is attached to needs to be replaced because it maybe stripped. that's why instead of moving both sides it only moves one side. both carbs are doing this and this is why im not sure if it really messed up or im just not looking at it right. i did…

When I upgraded my brakes, I switched to a 280ZX master brake cylinder with the bleed nipples on the engine side. When removing the air cleaner, the forward bleed nipple keeps scratching the paint on my air cleaner cover. My solution is to move the carbs inward 0.35" by machining down the carb spacers. (see attached pic of original spacer next to thinner spacer.). This should provide adequate clearance for the air cleaner. This week I'll do a gasket drawing and use the laser at work to cut some new gaskets. (Yes, it's a cool toy...). * If you try this, be aware that machining phenolic can create toxic dust, so use a vacuum to carry-away the fines generated during…

  12. I picked up a stock '72 air cleaner from the junkyard over the weekend with the idea that I could reuse or resell it. Downside, the cover is mangled at the front, the 'snout' was crunched when the car it came out of was HAMMERED into something. The core support and radiator actually came that far back. ...the baseplate, on the other hand, is untouched. I've got english style 'mushroom' air cleaners on the carbs right now, and they've got a opening smaller than the carb throats themselves(horrible!). They don't have an integral venturi, and my understanding is it's rather dumb to run SU style carbs without them. My idea is to cut the baseplate using a Dremel to remove th…
