I have a complete original exhaust system from a 1978 Z that I am going to install on my 1976 280Z, non-CA model, to replace the original one, since someone smashed the exhaust pipe up against the differential when lifting, to about half volume. Plus the $30 O'Reilly's Cherry Bomb turbo muffler just doesn't sound right. Could anyone tell me what is inside the small "pre-muffler" up next to the transmission? The little mini-muffler. It looks to me like a place-holder for the California model's catalytic converter. Is it just hollow or does it create a flow restriction? If it's hollow I will just get a new muffler and install it as is, saving on gaskets and effort. If …

I have been restoring my 1971 240z for the past 5 years, trying to get it as close to stock as possible. The very last piece that I need is a downpipe from the stock manifold. I have looked everywhere for one, and cannot find anything - new, used, aftermarket, fabricated like the original - nothing. Does anyone have any leads on this part. I have pretty much expected that a new oem or aftermarket does not exist in the world, but does anyone have a used one from a car that they installed headers on? Or, does anyone know of a shop that can fabricate one without having to have the car present since it is currently not in a drivable condition? Any help you could give me…

Finally got the exhaust installed last night. I posted a link to the video on Photobucket. I've got MSA 3-2-1 Headers with the MSA Performance exhaust. http://s756.photobucket.com/albums/xx206/wvmiata/?action=view¤t=DSCN0368.flv Should have the remaining three body panels tomorrow, then I'll go get it inspected.

In regards to another car I, well, regard; I happened upon some NOS Ansa tail pipes for a 1975 Toyota Celica 2000GT! For those not aware thats the first year they had the 20R motor and power bulge hood. Essentialy the first true year of the "Celica" 2000GT. Will post pics when arrive. Knowing me I tried to talk myself out of it, but couldn't do it . Now all I have to do is buy a Celica or find someone who already has one .

I just got my Z out for a drive through the mountains. With the driver's window down there is a strong odor from the exhaust. Any idea about where that might be coming from? I have inspected the ehaust system and it seems to be in good shape, not holes or breaks. Any ideas are welcomed.

I'm 2 weeks into ownership on this car and there's a ways to go. It has 2 glass packs, but the routing on the pipe takes it under the differential, slightly left. I can lift the pipe and it hits the diff. So today I had the shop look at it. Turns out the front glass pack had a pipe shoved all the way thru, making it like no muffler at all. And the glass pack in the rear was turned backwards. So I had them take the front pack out and brought back new pipe, routed correctly around the diff, and attached the rear pack the right way around. It breathes a bit better now, and looks better too.

Hello, I am brand new to Z-ownership and am needing to do some work on the exhaust system of my 76 280z. I read most of the posts in this forum and am now more confused than when I started. Most of the time the Z will be my daily driver and my driving style is not very spirited. I am wanting to make sure my mods do not negatively affect mpg. Also I do not need Daisy to be terribly loud. What are the major differences between the 6 to 1 headers and the 3 to 2 headers from MSA? I think I read somewhere that the 3 to 2s were better for lower-end driving and read somewhere else that there was no proof of that. Any input or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Tha…

Hey guys. I was was wondering what is recommended. I currently have tuned ceramic tuned MSA headers running into 2 1/2 inch pipe that reduces down to 2 inch at a dynomax 1 in 1 out muffler. The engine is just the stock 2.4L engine with the head milled once. I Used to have a cherry bomb glass pack and loved the sound but it didnt generate enough back pressure and my low end power suffered. My chief complaint with the current muffler is that it does not mount flush under the body, a bit of it hangs down and its just an eye sore to me. Its not a mounting issue as it is mounted as high as can be but due to its length, as the body lines on the rear low quarter panel curve upwa…
