First off, I'm not sure if this should be here or in the Electrical, but here goes.... I have the opportunity to purchase one of these units for my 83 280ZX (non-turbo) 2+2. I Googled the unit and came across an article from "Mitchell 1" that had a "Technical Service Bulletin" regarding use of said unit on an 83. It reads something to the effect to NOT use "Special Tool EFI Analyzer on any 1983 Nissan product with electronic fuel injection". It may cause damage to the car's electrical system or the analyzer itself and to use the alternate form of testing with a volt-ohm meter. Has anyone on here used one of these units on an 83? Appreciate any response before I go to …

I need your honest opinion. Can this 32 year old car EVER be reliable again??? If it was anything but a 280ZX in a color I love, the straw would have already broken this camel's back. I am literally having something NEW go wrong with this car before I am finish fixing the LAST thing to go wrong. Sometimes two Case in point: I am diagnosing a no-start-when very cold. I find the headlight relay is staying powered up, warm to the touch, even when the ignition is off, when I am in search of the fuel injection relay . It must be intermittent because I THOUGHT my battery was getting weak, yet other times it was fine after sitting for days or weeks. I decide to pull…

This morning (11/3/2012), I was visiting Pick-a-Part (LKQ) in North Houston (Behind Fry's) and saw a complete 81 ZX NA. The car had not been picked yet, it had real nice six spoke wheels & good rubber, complete engine, 5-Speed, 390 rear-end. All of the body panels were good and straight. Nice tail lamps and complete - but nasty interior (man I hate the ZX interior, but anyway...). The car is maroon. Happy picking.

I have an 83' 280zx Coupe. I've had the brakes and power steering pump rebuilt. Its does not have original paint, the previous owner had a mask job done. The interior is in great shape and the engine runs smooth at 190,000 miles. The manual transmission has just started to go - need synchro replaced. It still drives, but you have to shift a bit gently between 1st and 2nd. My question for fellow Z enthusiasts, is will it be worth it for me to have the transmission replaced or just try to sell this "as is"? I'm interested in purchasing a different Z car, but am not sure there is a market for a Z with failing transmission. Any advice on this?

What's your repair theology --- do it all at once, or one step at a time. For instance, when I replaced my injectors, I did it one step at a time. Two weeks before I replaced all my high pressure fuel injection hoses. Next was replacing the injectors themselves, and the connectors. Today I got around to replacing the fuel filter. My theory is/was, if I do things ONE STEP at a time, and something goes wrong, I immediately know what to look at -- because I only changed ONE THING at a time. If I do it ALL AT ONCE, and things screw up, I don't know if it was the hoses, the filter, or the new injectors. Now, if my fuel filter was holy, and feeding crud into my NEW injectors,…

Here's a great tutorial; take you 2 minutes or less to view the whole thing. http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm Vaccum readings will give you a very good indication of the mechanical condition of an engine, the rings, valves, etc. You can attach a vacuum gauge and have a reading in 30 seconds or less. These days reading a vacuum gauge has become a lost art, which is a shame, because doing it FIRST can save you a lot of time chasing in the wrong direction. It's fast, and easy, and with tutorials like this you no longer even have to memorize all the different possible reading scenarios.

Good battery, good starter, but it either clicks, or does nothing when you turn the key. This time of year when it starts getting colder is when most batteries and starters fail. The engine oil is thicker, it takes more torque to crank, the battery puts out less amperage when it's colder, blah, blah blah. If you've already tested your battery (or replaced it), and ditto for the starter, but it still does NOT crank, here's your diagnosis path. It's a how-to for voltage-dropping your starter circuits ---- and cheating, to save time. Before you voltage drop ANYTHING you need to take both your battery terminals completely OFF the battery. I have seen them look PRISTINE bu…

I just bought a used turbo off of craigslist for about $150 and was curious if this was a good price for this part. I purchased it for a project 82 280zx with a not working turbo and was curious if this was a good deal?

I found myself replacing a # of rock hard (baked) vacuum hoses yestiddy, and thought I'd share a few tips. The # trick is NOT to bust off the "barb" or nipple it fits onto. Some of these small plastic pieces are ir-replaceable. What I'll do is take a tubing cutter, and cut the old hose in half 1" away from the barb. Now i'm only fighting with one end. Next I'll take a boxcutter, and slit the hose ALONG the barb, in two places, 90 degrees from each other. If it's a plastic barb, be very, very careful. (Try also never to pull the boxcutter TOWARD yourself, some nasty cuts can result. Ask how I know this...) Usually with two slices, you can then TWIST the remainin…

Well apparently I made an account here when I first bought my car (2008), but have never actually made a post! My name's Ian, and there's a possibruity that you recognize my username, or my car. I whore it way out haha I'm from Las Vegas, and I'm currently setting my car up for drifting, and being as low as possible. and here is my car: (I've since lowered the front half an inch to get rid of that terrible reverse-rake) So much time and effort to fix the rear camber, and so much more to mess up the front and yes, the passenger side is (still) smashed up and this is sort of what my engine looks like: and yes, I get down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=…
