Howdy, I recently got my first Datsun, a 280ZX from 1979. It runs great, but it has some cold start problems -- and I mean that literally. In the morning when I try it it cranks but won't turn over; when I get home after a day of it sitting in the sun I do have to give it some gas to get it up to idle but it eventually starts fine. I checked the oil and it isn't any more viscous than it should be. I've read that the stock air pumps from this model can sometimes result in this sort of issue and that it may be worth replacing if cleaning it doesn't work, has anyone else experienced something similar? Thanks in advance, Julian

Whats up forum, New guy here, Forgive me if this is a little bit long, but I figure the more you know about the situation, the more you can help me if you want to. I need some help with my '82 Datsun/nissan 280zx. Today I was driving it through town. "leisure fun drive" I heard a back fire, and the engine quit. I couldnt get it to restart. The starter will crank the engine like its supposed to, I can hear the fuel pump going, No start. During the investigation process trying to rule out what went wrong, here are the steps I went through. Checked fuel pump-it works, checked fuses (the ones I could find - All check out ok). In car and under hood. Check…

Another while I'm at it. Im replacing the distributor cap and rotor and notice one bolt/screw to hold down the cap ('82 turbo) has been replaced with a wood screw by po and it isnt working. I look at the distributor base and see a mess of a hole. I break out the Chiltons (next to worthless) and it says just loosen the two hold down bolts. Done. It may just be very hard to remove but I have been know to over muscle things before. Does it lift straight up and out? Thanks

Hi, I have to kick my ECU with my left foot to get it to let my fuel pump cycle up so my car will start. Other wise when I turn the key to ON before cranking,my Fuel pump relay starts clicking and I can hear the pump pulsate.Once I hear the relay Stop clicking and the pump goes full cycle(runs striaght for about 5 second, then stop(pressures up)) I know I can turn the key further and crank/start the car. Sounds like I need another ECU box. I have a 1982 Datsun 280ZX Turbo with Automatic ECU# A18 602 045... Anybody have an extra for sale or give to help out a buddy. Thanks

Any ideas? I turn the key on(before cranking)and I hear clicking under the dash on the passenger side and hear my fuel pump pulsating. After a few dozen give or take clicks it stops and I hear my fuel pump, pump up and stop,I then can start the car. And occasionally while driving it will go into the clicking mode and die or spit and sputter. I have a new pump. Please tell me a simple fix. I tried a switched hot wire to the pump but no help. Thanks so much.

I have a 1976 280 Z. I was running well until I took it to have an oil change. Since then it has not run well at all. I assume that it is just happend at the same time. I have checked the fuel pressure. I have 32 pounds of pressure at the filter both with the engine running and not running. I ran Seafoam through the system and checked the compression. I have 125 to 140 on 5 of the six cylinders. The 6th one has on it. I need to recheck it to make sure that I didn't miss something. I have drained the fuel tank and changed the fuel filter twice since it got. I sat for ten years before I bought it. The car will run until it warms up and then it looses power and b…

I've got a puzzling situation going on with the brakes in my 82 non-turbo 280ZX. I've had the car for 3-4 years but had not removed the wheels to inspect the brakes. I decided it was time so first removed the front wheels. I suspected that the front right caliper might be sticking. This pad was worn much more than the left so I replaced both sets of pads. I could not get the pistons to retract so decided I should replace them. I got a set ($28 each at Auto Zone) and also ended up replacing the front left flex hose connecting the hard pipe to the caliper. I bled the fronts, got solid fluid flow but when I did a short test drive in my townhome area the pedal was very mushy.…

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I just bought a 1983 280ZX last week and it runs beautifully. However, I do have a small issue. Whenever I shift into the 3rd gear, I get this nasty vibration feedback before it sits in the third gear. The 4th does the same thing, although it is milder. The first, second, and fifth does it fine. Reverse does it sometimes, only milder than the 4th. How would I go about to solve the issues? Any feedback would be much appreciated.
