So I just recently (yesterday) bought myself my very first Z car. A 1980 Datsun 280zx completely stock. I'm about to do an alt on it in hops to getting it running! She will start with a charged battery then die when charge dies. I was originally told it was lacking the Alt belt but upon inspection the belt was actually there so I presume that would mean the Alt is faulty. is there anything else I should take into consideration and close look at while restoring this? any problem spots or things worth doing for the long run? Unknown miles and while its running there's no weird noises other than an exhaust leak. any help is appreciated!!

pilgrim Super Moderator This week I pulled out my faithful old Radio Shack sound level meter and went for a drive. A couple of years ago I switched from rubber suspension bushings to poly, and I was convinced that my 83 ZXT is perceptibly louder inside as a consequence. The meter measures the noise level either of two ways, but (EDIT) I will just quote the relevant one. A-weighted, 500-10,000 Hz, which is the primary human hearing range and is the most used rating for workplaces and general sound levels. The human ear doesn't hear low frequency sounds as well as higher frequencies. …

I looked a '82 ZX today and I liked a lot of things about it but one. It doesn't run but that does not concern me. It has minimal rust, headliner is falling. Here's the rub, both floorboards are wet and it smells musty inside. I've owned a 280zx that leaked after a new windshield install. I currently own a 280z that leaked from the cowl rust around the intake chimney. Question. What is the most likely location of leak on one of these? One clue could be the forward edge of the dash is surface rusty. The price is right but I don't want to rebuild another cowl. I appreciate any input.

I'm rebuilding the power steering pump on my '83 280zx and there is a snap ring on the back with no visible way of removing it. I'm hoping someone else has done this before and knows the trick. The front one is a circlip with two holes. That was fairly easy. This back one has straight ends, not beveled and no room behind it to fit any pick tool. It doesn't even slide in the groove. The rebuild kit didn't include one even though the FSM says not to reuse it. Any ideas?

In another thread, car54280zx posted pictures of a fabulous restoration. The cost of this restoration was not stated, but another member posted that a friend paid $140,000 Cdn for a similar restoration. This 280ZX is now better than new. When this much is spent, is it legal and ethical to reset the odometer? I have gone back 10 years of posts, and this question has not been asked previously.

Goodmorning everyone. I have just finished the restoration of my 1979 Datsun 280 ZX. Now I would like to register it in Italy and the Motorization has asked me to provide the TECHNICAL DATA of the machine in addition to the Circulation Book and the Certificate of Ownership of the previous owner. How can I do to get the technical data? Many thanks to all those who will help me in this search.

My gas cap is stuck. Previously, I lubed the lock and had a new key made. The Lock/Unlock function was fine, but the cap felt like it was stuck/corroded in-place. When the cap is locked, I know it spins. So, I locked the cap and with a small piece of wood using a hammer, I got it to spin. Unlocked the cap, and it still was stuck. It would rotated about 45 degrees and then stop. I used the piece of wood and hammer, and now it will rotated grudgingly but not un-thread. Has anyone else had this problem, and what was the remedy? I am prepared to buy another cap. I have gone back 10 years in this forum without finding a similar situation.

Dad has moved to assisted living and left me to deal with his baby (79 280ZX black w/gold trim, 54,000, yes 54,000 miles) never been housed outside, always had a cover inside) I am trying to sell it and have found a good, local, potential buyer ($27,000). He is coming by this weekend to take it for a test drive. I am going to replace the battery....it has been sitting for years without regular driving, battery is weak. I also need to add gas to it. I don't know anything about it other than it should take leaded gas! What do I add to the unleaded gas to make it run better. I was told there was an additive that can be added. Please help! I know nothing about cars. Chic…
