Hello, My alternator has an external regulator and I was wondering if i could convert it to an alternator with and internal regulator ? If I can is there a major benefit to the conversion. I have done alot of research with the local auto parts dealers and some of them say that a 1979 280zx 2+2 is suppose to have an internal regulator and some say external. I have owned the car since it was new and i am under the impression that the Factory knows best but I wanted to make sure. also Could someone give me the proper procedure for removing the alternator. My car has been garaged for the last five years and I have misplaced my Chilton's manual. Any Words of Wisdom would be G…

I am mediocre with the mechanical aspects of the car, but I have replaced anything and everything that has to do with the startng of the car except the ECU and Wiring Harness. It turns over somewhat, but doesn't fully crank and the cap on the distributor is getting knocked around by the distributor. I am not sure if the entire Wiring Harness needs to be replaced or if it is just the ECU.

New user here. I've got a lovely 83 280zx n/a 5 speed. I've been through all the electrical thread and there is nothing about the stereo. I need some clue as to what the wires are supposed to be for the factory radio. Previous Owner trashed the radio harness when he installed an aftermarket radio and amplifier. The power antenna works when power is supplied directly to it. Goes up and down just fine. But it doesn't do anything unless forced to by direct power. There are also several wires spliced behind the passenger seat and a blue/red wire is simply cut. I'm about to strip all the POs wiring out and try to start over due to being totally lost trying to fi…

I have a 1980 280ZX with air conditioning. The water **** is leaking and needs to be replaced. Mine has a copper lead that goes into the heater unit somewhere under the heater core. The only one I've seen for sale is the water **** without the copper "sensor" thing. SO... does anyone know what will happen if I use the the water **** without the sensor to replace mine?? What will I loose by not having the sensor? This is what I have (see page 8) http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/zxclimatconversion/part1.pdf This is what I can find to purchase http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/SHC03/16-7648 Any help is appreciated.

Hello everyone I am needing a 1982 280zx turbo AFM, wire loom and ecu. I have a 1975 280z that has an '82 turbo transplant. Problem is that the air to fuel ratio gets lean at higher rpm's. Which is why my pistons are melting and broken:tapemouth. So I figure this may be the best solution, unless someone here has a better idea with what I have to work with. Note, I have not look hard into mega squirt yet. but lets start here first. Thanks. Big Al.

My questions is specific to a non-digital dash 280zx (1981 model). Has anyone installed a MSD box and got their stock tach to work without the need to install the tach convertor? . Car is starting and running fine, just can't figure out why the tach is not getting a correct signal. Tach is not registering a signal at all. If a tach convertor is needed in this application, can someone recommend a specific part number/model? I've seen several discussions on MSD with older Z models but not for 280zx applications.

I have posted several times incorrectly in the S30 forums. Now I have it straight. I'm trying to start a 79 that has set up for two years. the PO replaced the starter and didn't wire the starter ground back so when I tried to start it the wire going from ignition to the coil cooked. (I had replaced the fusible link with a wire too thick) So, many lessons learned I'm trying to get it started. I'm not getting spark at the plugs. I noticed the coil is getting hot...very hot..with the ignition ON. It may be bad. It started leaking after a few minutes. I will replace it tomorrow night and try again. Any help would be appreciated. This is my 16 year old daughter's car and we …

Okay, I just bought a 1980 280zx. It looked good after test drive and a mechanic looked it over. Here's the problem: when I put it in Park (its an automatic) and I try to turn it on, it won't start! So, I dropped it into neutral and it started and ran great but now when I do this it'll start and then slowly die out!! Now it takes several attempts and luck to get her going. Any thoughts? I'm thinking either faulty wires or somethings loose? I'm looking for a mechanic right now because I really want to get her on the road for summer. Any input would be great.
