I have an 1983 280ZX. For a while it has been sporadic on starting. It will crank for a while and eventually start, but sometimes it takes a while. I have noticed the smell of fuel as well. I don't see any leak at the fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator does not have fuel coming through the vacuum line either. The injectors don't seem to be leaking. This weekend while I was working on a separate issue I finally think I found the source of the leak - but I am not sure what the part is. Can someone take a look at the pictures and let me know what this is?

I know this is probably out there already but does anyone have any pictures of their carb setups so I can get a better understanding of how to set them up. Fuel line, fuel return line, throttle cable, and what all these hoses and that are on it for. I have a carbed 1983 280ZX with a naturally aspirated N54 any help would be appreciated. So I fired this thing up and got a good test drive in our fine Washington rain today. All in all I'm pretty happy with it. The .080 head mod makes a pretty noticable difference. I must say however, that my original engine was pretty worn out, so any improvement must seem major to me. I'm running the same transmission and differential that came out of the '82 that the engine came from. I had removed the dash weeks ago to replace the heater hoses through the firewall, and in replacing the dash, I must've gone and knocked my temp gauge in just the right way to make it peg all the way to the top indicating total meltdown in the dash. But the meat thermometer in th…

The notches in the cam sprocket appear to line slightly advanced to the notch in the thrust plate. Is this an issue? The crank timing is set to zero on the dial. I couldn't get a picture, but the intake and exhaust valves look closed to me. The last picture is the one that shows my concern. The mark indicates that I may be slightly advanced. The timing chain and all associated parts are new. Sent from my Coolpad 3310A using Tapatalk

It might very well be that I'm using the search feature wrong, or Tapatalk and my phone are making things difficult. At any rate, I've picked up my P79 head from the machine shop and am preparing to chase the threads on my block prior to installation. Can someone advise me on which thread pitch to use in my tap set. Thanks in advance. Sent from my Coolpad 3310A using Tapatalk

I was just re-installing the head on my 1983 280ZX Turbo when I ran into two problems: 1) One bolt would not tighten properly. It was one of the last I installed, and when I turned it and got no increase in resistance past about 30 lbs/ft, I decided that I probably had a bad bolt. At least I was smart enough NOT to keep turning it, which would most likely have broken it off. I checked the bolt hole to confirm that there wasn't debris in the bottom blocking the end of the bolt, then re-used one of the original bolts and it torqued down just fine so the head is torqued into position properly. I have a new bolt ordered. 2) Of more concern - I had all the head bolts but the o…

Hi y'all! I've just bought my first Datsun just two Saturdays ago, a very beat looking 1980 280ZX N/A, despite it's beat appearance it supposedly it has a refreshed motor, rebuilt trans, new sway bars front and rear, new gas adjust shocks, and much more. However, I've recently developed a leak of oil coming from seemingly just under the oil filter, or around it. I've heard it may be the pressure sender, however when I was under the car it was definitely coming from just "behind" and under the oil filter. I was thinking possibly it's worked it's way loose, or become damaged or something similar. Edit: It pretty much only really leaks when the motor is running. No…

Please forgive me if my terminology is a bit off, I'm posting this as I uncover this problem, and my FSM was foolishly wiped with the rest of my computers memory. I took my Z on a drive today, but didn't get far until I heard some evil coming from the rear end. It turns out that my passenger side half shaft (I can never remember if they are technically CV or half shafts) has dislodged itself quite a bit from where it seats in to the differential. I pulled it out. There appears to be no damage, but the question remains... How did this happen? Is there supposed to be some sort of circlip at the end of the spline assembly, in the notched groove? I've never rem…

I have a puff of blue smoke at cold start. Been that way for about a year. The car goes through approximately 1 quart of oil in 3.000 miles(10W30). Per a friend following in another vehicle, there is no smoke under heavy load, and no smoke after high engine vacuum(3500+RPM downhill followed by acceleration). Oil consumption goes down to about half a quart if i use 20W50 instead of 10W30(conventional). High mileage oil with seal conditioners seem to have no effect on cold start smoke or oil consumption. Compression reads in the low 170's evenly across all 6 cylinders with a good tester(high 150's with the Harbor Freight tester, but still even across all 6). Did not …
