Been trying to identify a VG30 engine I have. Searched the innerwebs and even this forum (among others) with poor results. When I search using the serial number I get lots of hits that lead me to engine swap threads, or information about the later 'W' version from after 1987. As near as I can tel this one is the 'A' version, but I can only guess as I cannot find a definitive description of the serial numbers for these engines. The one I have is normally aspirated, is bolted up to a manual transmission with no transfer case. So from that I cen be sure it was not in a front drive car, and not in a 4 wheel drive pick up. Is there a resource I am missi…

Hi all. My 1982 280zx refused to start a few days ago in a very strange way and then, when she did start, blew clouds of white smoke. Before I have her towed to a mechanic, I'd really appreciate the opinion of club members as to just how much trouble i'm in for. This is my daily driver, so it's fairly urgent that I do something about getting her back on the road. She had been running really well - plenty of power, including uphill, with very little exhaust smoke. Oil level hasn't moved since I last serviced her about three months ago. When I turned the key the other day, the starter kicked and I could see and hear that the engine was attempting to turn over. The b…

1980 280ZX N/A Stock exhaust manifold. When deleting EGR, is it nessicary/advised or not recommended to remove and plug the EAI system introducing air into the forward part of the stock exhaust manifold? Sent from my N9130 using Classic Zcar Club mobile

I wasn't sure if this is an engine or electrical problem so I'll start here. I have a 82 280zx 2+2. runs and drives great, no problems there. There is only one problem that I have been having lately. With motor running, I have never seen my water temperature gauge go anywhere near the middle where it should be. It only goes up a little bit from the 120 mark. The gauge seems to be accurate, the motor never actually get hot, it only get somewhat warm. My heater just barely gets warm, even after car has been running for hours. Any thoughts on this? I was thinking maybe the thermostat is stuck open or something, this car did sit for a couple of years before I got it. I will p…

About a month after I bought my car every time I would start my car it would crank and crank and crank and crank till finally it turned over. This got worse and worse over time but now it is just the same every time I try to start my car. I have been told it could be a cold start valve but other people say it has to be really cold outside for the cold start valve to even turn on. Please help, I need to get her running right again. It is a 1983 280zx non-turbo

Upon removing intake manifold, EGR threads broke. Easiest option is EGR delete. No emissions, no O2 sensor. I understand how to plug it, and I don't expect any performance gains. My question is if there is any negative effect on the car, and if anyone has done it, what were the results. Sent from my N9130 using Classic Zcar Club mobile

Hey guys, You may know that I am building a ZX motor for my 240z with a euro SU carburetor configuration, but I am stumbling over the harmonic balancer I should use here. I've read about thirty threads on this topic, from the 5 or 6 forums that I follow, and none of them is actually comparing the options against each other. I only need one pulley, so I had initially intended to go with a standard 240z balancer, and if I could find one from Europe with just one pulley, even better. However, I've read in a lot of places that the factory balancers are prone to failure. I don't plan to hang out in the high revs all day long, but I'll definitely be getting into them …

Hi all, I am new to this forum and to Z cars. I bought my 1982 280zx non turbo from my neighbor who had it rotting away in his garage. I started with the motor, got it running by basically running through and replacing all of the obvious things like; injectors, plugs, plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, water pump, radiator, thermostat, any hoses that were bad, computer, coil, cap and rotor, and so on. I had this thing running perfect so I moved to the inside and completely restored it. Long story short I was getting very close to being finished when I noticed fuel leaking from the rear of the car. The leak seemed like it was coming from the fuel pump so I decided to rep…

hello all. just joined club. Still figuring out whats what. I just bought a 79 zx. It had been sat indoors for about 12 years. 120k only Put a new battery in it and drove it about 40 miles home. Will not idle below 2000. I cannot find any air leaks, the idle screw on the AFM is fully in ? if I let it out rpm goes to 3000 or so. Before I start messing with anything, does anyone have any obvious things I should look at? The idle is the same hot or cold, any suggestions welcome, Steve

I've got a factory remote oil cooler from a ZX turbo on my Z but one of the fittings between the mount and the radiator is leaking so I need to remove it and repair it. I didn't mount it on the car and am curious if the threaded fitting on the block is still there so I can remove all of the oil cooler components and just screw the oil filter back on to the block or was it removed to put the remote mount on. Any help would be appreciated.

I have an 87 300zx. I know that you need Dexron atf for the power steering. My dad has some factory Dex 6 left over. I'm wondering if that would work for the pump without screwing it up.
