What I Did Today

A forum showing progress or work done to your (or someone else's) Zcar today or during the week.

  1. Started by Stanley,

Datsun's been running lean for a while, to busy (yes! finally work!) to fix it, lost a race against my neighbor's hot rod crx couple weeks ago. At least the mileage was good. Set mix today, don't know where everything's set, was just tweaking the idle screws and mix nuts etc til the flowmeter and push pins were right, so I'll have to go back and see where it's set. Took a ride, a huge difference, felt the G's pushing me back in the seat. Hope it's not too rich, don't want to foul the plugs, but didn't see any smoke.

  2. Started by Stanley,

Tried the sight glass from ZT. It's pretty simple, looks like a bleeder screw with a clear tube attached. Guess you could make one pretty easy. They have handy clips to hang over the vent on the lid. Just take out the drain plugs (3 screw SU's) and screw them in. Marked the front bowl 22mm down from the top of the bowl, 22mm + 3mm from rim of lid to bottom of lid = 25mm like they say). The bottom of the lid as shown on FSM is not a good reference point since you can't see in with the lid on. My front carb was about 9mm low, figured it was low but worse than I thought. Finally got it right last night. Went back today and set the rear fuel level 23mm from bottom of lid…

  3. Well, this has been an ongoing process for the past month and a half attempting to prep one of the two heater face plates I have for the 240's I have. Originally some of the chrome was flaking and the black paint was worn through in places so I made that bold jump to "strip it" to the base plastic. The face plate has been in muric-acid for the the duration, only removed to scrub off the loosened material with 00 steel wool. I have attached a couple of photos showing what the face plates looked like and what the strip plate looks like. Now I just have to get a pint of Mirrachrome, and then do the black paint and then detail the letters and hopefully I will have a fully re…

  4. Picked up a 1970 240Z that my aunt and uncle gave to me a few months ago and have been working on it quite hard ever since. It was my aunt's first car that she got in 1973 and she has had it since. 11 years ago a connecting rod put a baseball size hole out the side of the block and it has sat in their garage since then. I gladly took it off their hands and the project has begun! The plan is to do a engine, trans, and rear end swap in it. I already picked up a 1979 ZX that I took the complete drivetrain out. The body was junk but the drivetrain was good. Got a buddy going over the trans and rear end for me pops is doing a complete rebuild on the engine. Also ditchi…

They're a lot easier coming off than back on. Ruined a set of pants and about 1/2 tube of grease under my finger nails. Tommorrow I'll be cleaning tools and enjoying cold beverages. Adieu!

  7. I am recovering from surgery and dying of boredom. I, while thinking of something to do I decided to finally reassemble my original 240Z Datsun Competition Mikuni 44’s. They have been sitting dry and disassembled since the early 80’s. A couple of years ago I got the urge to pick up rebuild kits, linkage upgrade parts, new air horns, ventures and jets for street use, (close to $800.00 in parts from Wolf Creek Racing). As I said earlier I just got around to putting them back together today. I ran across a problem, although I had told Todd (Wolf Creek Racing) what carburetors I had he sent me the wrong needles and seats. No problem, still in original packaging. So I thought…

  8. I bought a turbo L28 for a swap in one of my 240Z's. Hopefully everything will arrive by the 23rd. Super anxious to see how it drives when its done, but not anxious to swap 2 engines. The one i'm pulling out i'm putting in my other 240 as its getting tired. I'll post up some pics when the pallet arrives

  10. Started by Oiluj,

Drove the Z across the Bay & Carquinez Straits bridges to my family's Easter gathering in Vallejo. Most of my family hadn't yet seen the Z on the road. Car drove great. Ended-up showing the car to various family members several times as they arrived. All approved and a couple suggested I let it "live" in thier garage. One young niece wants me to leave it to her after I can't drive anymore... Was more traffic than I anticipated, so I was being extra cautious and brought her home without a scratch. Did hit an unavoidable, "mother of all pot-holes". Steering seems fine, but it was a really a big jar and thump. Guess I'll have to take advantage of my free a…

  11. Hey guys. I haven't posted much here but I would like to start posting some of my progress. Here is what I did for the weekend: I changed out my headlight buckets. My car came with headlight buckets that were made of hard plastic and were cracked in several places. So I swapped them out with metal buckets that I bought off of ebay. My old front bumper was a poly xenon type 1 bumper, I liked it but I wanted something different. I bought a set of used metal lower valence along with a carbon fiber BRE style air damn. All in all, I like the updated look. The carbon fiber air dam goes good with my BRE style carbon fiber rear wing. well, here are the before and after pics: Be…
