I have finally embarked on the journey of rebuilding my '72 (HLS30-46372) after way too many years of procrastinating. I am the original owner, so the sentimental outweighs the practical in this project - just so you all know. I have the funds available to proceed with the project and I know that I'll most likely be "upside down" financially on the car when finished. As I said, the sentimental prevails here. My wife and I both understand that S30s are my mid-life crisis response. Considering all the other options, that's not too bad. The car is presently stripped and the shell is resting on a rotisserie that I bought from Kevin Mack (in Texas) several years ago. I'l…

Ever since I used a wheel cleaner that is acidic, I've begun to get corrosion on the outside of calipers, at least the toyota 4x4s up front. (I stopped using it, but unsurprisingly the rust remains.) I figure this is a good excuse to paint them so picked up a caliper paint kit from the local part store. But I'm wondering what's the best way to remove the rust prior to painting? I am going to unbolt the calipers and remove the pads, but don't want to remove the brake lines if I can help it, so whatever I use has to be something that can be used with the car up on stands in the garage. (for example: rinsing with huge amounts of water won't be an option.) What do the…

Hey guys, I ve been seeing a lot of Z's with black mouldings. Ive searched everywhere for those parts but i cant seem to find them. Are they even available or are all the people just sanding down the chrome and painting them black?

My car's color is #305 (metallic blue) - Am I better off getting a paint company to match the color (with chips) or can I get original colored paint from an aftermarket company/dealer?

A few spots on my car, have very minor hints of surface rust. I want to deal with this without sanding since the car was recently painted about 8 months ago. Is there a way I can apply chemical that will eat the rust, but not harm the paint? I've been considering "Naval Jelly" which is supposed to be awesome at dissolving rust, but I'm not sure if its the best solution for around painted areas. The best feature of the jelly is that it is easy to apply on awkward areas, and I can leave it sitting on the affected area for however long I need, to dissolve the rust. Has anyone had any experience using this stuff? http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDispl…

Went to check-out the car last week. The chassis, (sans doors, hood, hatch, front fenders, spoilers & mirrors), is painted. The silver paint with slightly darker "ghost" rally stripe came out just as I imagined! William did a really nice job. The re-paint of the engine compartment looks nice as well. Will post pics as soon as the other body parts are painted and assembled to the chassis.

I am looking at a 73 in Arizona that appears to be in very good condition all around. The paint appears to be original and in very good condition inside and out - as one would expect from a well taken care of, dry climate vehicle. Question is: the lower ledge of the rear hatch is rotted along a line, almost from one side to the other - What's up with that? Any reason why this would seem sensible? And is this an indication of other issues?

Today I began the mission of cleaning the hatch floor area. After removing the spare tire, i found what looks to be like the most rust my car has (could be worse) ... I scrubbed the area clean with a semi-wet sponge; including some of the rusty residue off. I know a wet sponge isn't exactly the best idea vs. rust; although I just wanted to get the area cleaned up a bit before I proceeded to deal with the rust. From the look, I think its just bad surface rust...it doesn't really rust through completely. My question... What would be the best way to tackle rust like this? Would you suggest grinding it off, then painting over it; or do they make good rust removing chemicals t…
