I became curious as to whether there was a way to objectively measure gloss, shine, etc. I found some interesting terms, such as DOI (distinctiveness of image) and RIQ (reflected image quality), and nice instruments that can measure all of that for $4-5K. I also see simple glossmeters on Amazon for $150-200. I almost expected to find an Android app that used the front-facing camera to analyze the image reflected from a test-pattern display, but was disappointed. Anyhow, has anybody used such tools? I'm trying to paint my 280Z, and I have no paint experience. I'm disappointed in the level of 'shine' that I'm getting after wet-sanding, buffing, polishing, as c…

I am breaking down a 1976 280z to prep for media blasting. As I was breaking down the hatch, I noticed inside it that there was a bracket in the lower middle, just above the release button. It's not attached to the outer skin. It almost looks like there was a piece of foam between it and the sheet metal. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Hey all, So I'm in the process of tearing down my '77 and it's looking like these fenders are welded onto the rocker panels and maybe the subframe. Here's a closeup of where the seam should be between the fender and the rocker, and some photos of the underside where the bolt(s) should be attaching the fender... Is this a typical repair? I had a '77 before and it wasn't like this so I'm certain it isn't factory. At this point I assume I'll be cutting this puppy off. Any advice from you seasoned Z folks?

I’ve been thinking about doing some body work (small rust spots mainly) and getting an exterior respray (?) or quick paint job, something that hopefully matches the under hood factory color. The car is 90% original from Southern California and the clear coat has definitely disappeared in some places. Would this hinder the opportunity to sell my Z as a “survivor” later down the road? Pic for reference

Hello all, I’m in the process of installing my doors and it seems I have lost the compression washers. Does anyone know what size washer is needed or where I can purchase a set? I found a used set of 5 online, but I need 12. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Many months ago I posted a query on this forum. At the time I had two interior door panels in rough shape. They had been bought without door-latch holes and my attempts at cutting my own had failed - perhaps by 1/8 to 1/4 inch, but enough to make an ugly scene. My usual supplier, MSA, had new ones on back order for months, and I was becoming convinced they would ever have them. So I asked this forum for suggestions. ZKars and one or two others answered and referred me to Zcar Depot, a firm I had not previously dealt with. I called, and yes, they have them in stock; door latch openings pre-cut. Ordered a set. Have to say I was very impressed with the package. Th…

I'm considering a vinyl wrap as an alternative to a repaint due to cost and a lack of a paint booth. Has anyone wrapped their vehicle and can offer suggestions on amount of wrap needed and any problem areas that I might encounter on a Series 1 Z?

I am having all the bright bits powder-coated, including the door upper moldings, which are the strips that mount on the exterior of the door tops. These moldings originally have a rubber squeegee strip facing the glass. My question is, has anyone successfully reinstalled the squeegee strip? They were originally stapled on, which looks impossible to do again. Thanks as always

Oil pan is removed while doing new gasket/sealing. Please feel free to leave links or comments on the blue color paint that one has used. The other option is to just paint it black as well . Would be nice to go as close to OEM as possible on the oil pan color. Thanks!!!

I'm putting the 78 280z back together that I purchased from an estate. One of the stainless trim pieces for the drip rail was not installed on the car. I don't have the "clips" that fasten the trim to the body. I'm not sure what they are called because I haven't found any reference to this trim in the body section of my FSM. Any idea where I can find these clips. If I remember correctly, they are made of spring steel and each side trim piece has four or five clips.
