well, it's rainy season here in san diego. my poor car leaks through the windshield and the hatch, and plus i don't have any wipers! anyway, that's not the point of this thread. my fiancee told me that i should get the rust on my car taken care of since it's only going to get worse. so i'm like "ok!" wel, turns out it's going to be a little more intensive than i had thought. first place i go to quotes me $10,000 (US) to take care of the rust, misc pieces, and paint to the original white. $10K!!!! ouch... well, i decided to go to my mechanic friend to see what he thinks. he sends me over to this place where the guy has been into z's for 20yrs or so... he owns a body shop…

If I live where it rains a lot, is there any benefit to drilling drain holes in the body to prevent rust? Has anyone done this before? Where are the best places to drill and how big should the holes be? The reason I ask is because I popped the plastic panel off by the rear speaker and looked down into the left rear body panel and it looked like water had collected there but hadn't drained out. I don't know if it got there from the vents, or where, but I wanted to stop the rust before it got too out of control and prevent it from happening again.

Well, I had dropped my 70 Z off on July !st at the body shop. They told me it would be done the end of Sept. Now here it is the end of Oct, they said it was ready for paint. The body has so many ripples and waves. The body was in excellent condition when I brought it to them. After fighting with them for most of the day, I towed it out of there and brought it to another body shop. Four months wasted and $2500.00 given to them up front. Hopefully, it will be done in another four months. I was so excited to drive it soon. Oh well. I just had to vent. Thanks for listening. Rick.

Here's a question - has anyone attempted to restore a plastic badge before? What would be the best way to remove the paint to get down to bare plastic? Would paint stripper damage the plastic? Hope someone can help!

I took the fresh air inlet (inside engine bay, between the radiator support and the inner fender) off my parts car because it's in better condition. The only problem is it has some overspray on it from the last paint job. Any suggestions on how to remove the paint without damaging the plastic?

I seem to remember reading about replacemnt battery trays somewhere but I can't seem to find the thread. Does anyone know if this part is available aftermarket wise? If not, any suggestions other than finding a donor car (without a rusted tray) and swapping it out would be welcome. Also need a fix for front inner fender (under tray battery tray). Battery acid has a vicious appetite! Car is in great shape rust wise other than in the mentioned areas so even a pricy fix would be worth the $, but I need the parts and can't seem to find them anywhere! I'd hate to have to fab up somthig out of sheet metal, my skills in that department are not quite that developed yet. Thanks

Hey all: I need some expert advice. I have been griding the rust off the floorpans over the weekend, fully expecting those "little holes" I noticed initially to end up taking over and making my decision to opt for new floorpans an easy one. But, after finishing up all I found were those pesky little pinholes and about 4 areas maybe 1 x 3 inches (2 on each side) in size... Should I still get the floorpans whacked out and rewelded? I was on the POR-15 website and they talk up their PorPatch product which sounds like a great option for wha I am dealing with. Has anyone used this stuff? Is this even a proper indication for that type of product? Here are some pics. Ma…
