Today I went to look at a 1970 L24 and was unable to identify what type of head it had. The only thing that I noticed was a stamp on the block saying E31. Does that mean that the head is also a E31 or ....... Can some one help

TTDRIVER, You were looking right at the head casting stamping (which is which head you have). The block casting stamp is on the flat boss to the left (of red circle below #5 spark plug.) and just below the block deck. These are L24, L26, L28, followed by serial numbers. TT it looks like you have the original motor/head, if the block is stamped L24. the head is a rare (now) early head.

TT driver,

As Frank13 said the head is correct for the car, with L24 stamped, its the correct "size" block for car....

I respectfully add that the numbers following the L24 should match the metal information tag screwed to the passenger side strut tower, inside engine compartment 99% of the time. The VIN # on that same tag should also match the VIN number stamped on firewall to be the original engine for that car....

I've been surprised over the past week or two, of the number of people that aren't truly aware of how to determine what engine is supposed to be sitting in their engine bay.
