grnskyline Posted February 11, 2004 Share #1 Posted February 11, 2004 ay guys Anyone want to know what I been doin the last 6 months? Well I pulled out my blown 260 motor and have now dropped in a 280 (stock). Lots of running around but its finnally in! yeay! Guess what? She dont want to start. The motor wount crank fast enough it seems. Battery is good as I pulled it out of a running regular driving car. So I thought starter's drawin too much current. Pulled out the old starter and put in another one from wreckers, . ... And ... same problem. It just dont turn. After a couple of rotations it wount turn at all. Symtoms of a flat battery right! So I got another battery and ......same prob. Last resort is to jump it, havent tried yet any ideas? cam\
Alan Pugh Posted February 11, 2004 Share #2 Posted February 11, 2004 Cam,Where did the engine come from, have you seen it running, has it been rebuilt. More information on the engine is required before much help can be given.
Z Kid Posted February 11, 2004 Share #3 Posted February 11, 2004 Sounds to me like it could be a dodgy earth, ie only a secondary earth is working and its not giving enough power to turn it over, it then heats up and gets worse?
seerex Posted February 11, 2004 Share #4 Posted February 11, 2004 has the dizzy been moved at all? if so check timing and firing order mine did the same
grnskyline Posted February 11, 2004 Author Share #5 Posted February 11, 2004 hey that was fast kEngine was bought from wreckers with 3 month warranty. (exp now). I am trusting the source as I have been back many times andhe has been helpful. So I dont believe motor is seized, a dud, etc. I am using the 260 distributor and have moved it from full advance to in the middle in hope of starting it. I havent tested the lights yet but fuel pump and gages go crazy when ignition on, so there is power enough......what do do about a dodgy earth? thanks again
HKSZ Posted February 11, 2004 Share #6 Posted February 11, 2004 I agree with Zkid earthing sounds the problem, where does your neg terminal connect to on this new motor and is there now paint or rust stopping a good ground. I would also be running a second cable from the block to the firewall or strut tops.Steve
grnskyline Posted February 24, 2004 Author Share #7 Posted February 24, 2004 ay guysafter alot of fidling and one of the fattest earth wires around she starts!! very exciting!Only running the extractors at the moment so bloodly loud!!!, sounds like a beast!however not all joy... she doesnt want to rev any higher than 2ooo revs, missing pretty bad. It looses almost all revs at 2 and power with a bang/misfire and returns to ildle almost. She idles all right, little rough but dont want to rev. It has an electornic distributor (came from broken 260 motor)havent played with timing much yet but is pretty much set in the middle. any ideas? plugs? cap? cam
Gav240z Posted February 24, 2004 Share #8 Posted February 24, 2004 carbs . Check float levels, richness, lean condition. Vacumm leaks, hmmm check the plugs see if they have fouled up at all. Hmmm could be distributor but very hard to tell from explanation. Once you had set your carbs correct. Then we will worry about that the distributor.
