What should I do?

I am going to try to start an l24 that has been in storage for 10 years. I have seen posts like this in the past but couldnt find it. What do I need to do to prep the engine to get it started safely. The engine ran very strong before it when into storage so I hope it will continue to do so after I get it going. Sorry if this has been asked before, but its always good to get advice from people who have failed/suceeded in the past doing what I am about to do. Thanks guys

Drain the oil and fill the engine with new. Change the oil filter and pre-fill it half way before you put it on. (do it fast!) Take the spark plugs out and squirt some light oil (3-in-1) oil in the cylinders. I would take the valve cover off and oil the cam. Crank the engine over on the starter until you see pressure on the gauge. It wouldn't hurt to clean out all the old gas from the carbs and fill them with new, change the fuel filter and engine belts. Flush the radiator system. Replace the points, condensor, spark plug wires and spark plugs. Then start it. If it's been sitting for ten years, it will need a new air filter also.

Make sure you disconnect the coil wire when you are turning it over to get oil pressure up, you don't want it to fire off until you are sure there is oil pressure, and that the oil has had a chance to circulate a little.

one minor thing not mentioned remove to spark plugs when spinning the engine to get the oil up and running then stick them in and start her up WITH THE VALVE COVER ON .

running into issues with mine only sitting 2 years , drain the gas tank otherwise you might pay the price later , start the car from an alternate fuel source like a mower gas tank to get it started and get all things up to pressure

P.S. You may want to check your thermostat and coolent to make sure that they are fresh and in good order.

Thanks for the help guys, but this engine was taken out of the car and has been sitting 10 years. I am not going to start it for maybe another month but I have already started to get it prepped by taking out the spark plugs and spraying a good amount of WD-40 in there. Also removed the valve cover and sprayed a good amount all over the cam and valves.

Im letting it sit so maybe it will help loosen wherever it needs to. Im all out of ideas and was wondering if I need to take the oil pan off and lube the crank. It has 10 year old oil it so I know before I get it going Im gonna have to change that as well. Do you guys recommend putting a little Auto tranny fluid with the new oil to help clean it up or not. If so how much and how. Sorry for writing so much but want to make sure that I get it back on the road and join you guys and gals in all the fun. Thanks

if the motor wasn't stored correctly , you will need to check for rust or corrosion in the cylinders , there are threads on this issue on the page good luck
