i have a 72 240z that smell gasoline every time.

if my windows are close i does not smell but if i open it ,oh boy, smell like all i need is a small spark and it will ignite. I trace the rubber hose already and there is no leak. i know its coming from the front. i know the carburator is not leaking either. where else can i look for the source of fresh gas smell (not exhaust smell).

Don't you hate that. Makes you feel like your going to explode. From what I've learned. Z are like vacuums for smells both exhaust out back and from under the hood. I've heard you basically have to find any holes in the cabin and seal it up. That would include any holes in the firewall, under the shifter, in the floorboards, and naturally the rear deck (primarily for the exhaust smells). As I've worked on my '73, I've systematically replaced gromets and filled them with silicon sealer. Now if you have a fuel leak somewhere along the line, it's going to suck it in. Hope that helps.

If it is fresh gas odor and not exhaust you need to check the hoses from the gas tank to the vapor tank mounted inside the passenger side rear panel behind the quarter window. They harden with time and crack open. It is the most likely source of the gas odor. They will need to be replaced, there have been numerous discussions on this here. Plus if you have a subscription to Sport Z magazine they covered it in the premier issue (winter 2000). I can't remember if that is still available to order a back issue.

You mention that the gas smell seems to come from the front of the car.

The 240 has fuel lines running to and from the engine to the fuel tank. That is TWO lines. These lines alternate between rubber and metal a couple times along their length. You may have a leak in one or both of those lines at any one of the transition points.

Additionally, you may have a broken fuel filter, a bad hose leading to the mechanical fuel pump, and / or a bad mech. fuel pump.

So, put your car up on stands and start tracing those lines. You may find that it is a simple rubber hose, or a hose clamp that needs replacing, but you may find something else.

This may or maynot help but I had a similar problem with my car. Every time I went into my garage I smelled gas. Everyone who went in there complained. I was messing around with my carbs and noticed my oil levels in my dampers were low. I topped them off and my gas smell went away. I also adjusted the idle screws and the next day there was no gas odor. Maybe you have a simple problem like this. It's at least worth looking at since it only take a few minutes.

thank you to every one that replied to my problem. it is solved already. this is what i did. i clean that part attach to the left fender. it has 3 air port. two in and 1 out. i attach the port that can be suck to the carb and the other two to the crank case vent and gas tank vent. i think before i clean it the carb hose is connected to one of the vent port.
