What model Z do or did you own?

Seeing as in the Japanese market the Z cars were always called a "Fairlady Z" (even with the "350Z") I think that putting more options to vote would be over-complicating things.

Perhaps a vote for "Other Z"? For Alan, at least!

I only have one Z. I've owned my 1970 240Z since December of 1983 where I purchased the car from Piere'Z in Hawthorn Ca. It is serial number HLS3002126 mfg date of 3/70. This was my daily driver for some time and was then put away in my garage until the year 2000 when I did a major redo of everything except the paint and window seals. It's now a weekend toy and like I've said many times before......"It so much fun to drive, it should be illegal". :love:

Had my 240 number 650 since 1986 bought it as a run down heap daily driver for two years as well as weekend racer 1987 two and half year rebuild back on road 1990 done lots of shows and club racing just a weekend toy now been with me so long it would be like losing one of my nuts to part with it now

Have had three Zs pass my way..

First up was 'MY-260' absolutely stock but very clean 1974 260z coupe (sadly automatic)

had a kicker of a stereo system and an exhaust which was waay too loud.. my first car (^-^ )

next up.. my current car a 1975 260z coupe which isnt so stock..

my dad bought MY-260 off me and we then bought a 240z as a parts car (had a nice L28 in it and all the bits my dad needed to convert MY-260 in to its current form).. also had some very tasty vette brakes which are still waiting to go on my car... ( )

as you may have gathered, my dad went nuts on my old car.. not really anything original left anymore!

Some Fairladies were 'Fairlady 240Z's', but not all of them.........

Probably the only really foolproof way of referring to ALL of the 'first generation' Z cars with one catch-all label is to do what Nissan themselves did, and call them all "S30" series Z cars. Nissan even uses the "S30" type name for the Japan-only 'S31' VIN-prefixed cars. To Nissan, anything pre S130-series is an S30 ( including the S31 ).

The problem - as I see it - is that many people refer to the "240Z" are the 'original' Z, when in fact this is only half the story.

I had a conversation with the guy who rents one of the garages next to mine a few weeks ago. He looked at my Fairlady Z-L project car ( a bare painted body, up on jackstands ) and sucked through his teeth.

"Looks like a big job" he hissed pessimistically, "what is it?".

"A 1970 Fairlady 240Z-L" I replied, "and I'm turning into a replica of a Fairlady Z432-R".

His face was blank. "What's that then?" he said, "it looks like a 240Z".

"I can see why you might say that" I replied, "they were brother and sister, but technically different models of the same basic S30-series type Z".

He looked slightly confused for a moment, and then a spark of recognition lit up his face;

"So its a 240Z, but different!" he exclaimed triumphantly.........

Although only relevant to a few members here, it would be nice to see a list that was a bit more comprehensive and included models that were not officially sold outside Japan ( but nevertheless did exist. Some of these cars found their way outside Japan through private channels. I own two of these orphans. I believe there are other members here who have cars that would not fit into the list as it now stands.

My 1970 Fairlady Z-L ( 'S30' VIN prefix ) certainly does not fit into the list. Its most certainly NOT a '240Z'. However, the '240Z' and the Fairlady Z-L are both 'S30-series' Z cars.....

My 1971 Fairlady 240ZG is ( technically ) a '240Z', but its perhaps not what most people would think of when they hear or read about a 240Z.

Summing up? Its a quagmire!

Not all Fairladies are Z's.

Not all Z's are Fairladies.

Not all Fairladies are Fairlady 240Z's.

Since the debut of the Z33 ( notice I didn't write '350Z' ) I've seen many journalists comparing them to the "original 240Z". I guess its just a matter of perspective, but it would be nice to see a well-informed journalist comparing to the "original S30-series Z".

I like your idea! What if you were to post a poll asking about the kind of 240's people own (including all countries). We have about 111 240z's in this poll, so far. Give this poll another week and go ahead and post the poll. You'd be the most qualified to do the list. What do you think?

I just returned from the Suncoast Z Car Club spring picnic. Lovely sunny day - low 80's - good turnout of members. 26 cars, 5 S30s.

280's in same

I know that's a heckuva lot of options, so probably not practical.

My guess(?) is that more 260's down under than anywhere else?
