Is the AFM from a L24E or from a S12 Turbo any different from the unit from an L28E? Any other cars I could grab them from ?

I would rather use a MAF sensor, but money and time dictates an AFM at the moment, and seeing as I dont have one yet I'm just looking for a cheap unit from the wreckers.

Cheers

Can't answer your question, but a MAF (mass air flow) is a type of AFM (air flow meter). AFAIK all the nissan AFM's are all MAF's. The other type is the VAF (volume air flow) as used on many toyota's and mazdas.

The third way of sensing engine load is with a MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor, but that isn't an AFM as such.

earlier nissans used an AFM with a door flap (vane air flow..or something?). a MAF sensor is a hotwire setup used on RB, VG, SR etc

There are actually places which sell a unit which will conver the signal from a hot-wire MAF sensor to an older door flapper AFM, unfortunately these units are exxy. I wouldn't mind knowing how to make one, because without one Im stuck with using an old crappy door flap style AFM.

I stand corrected! :)

The door flapper type is a VAF.

Do these units convert to the exactly correct voltages for the factory tuning of the L-jet box, or does it need some form of retuning (however that's done with an analouge ECU I don't know)?

I'd be tempted to stick with the flapper type till you can afford to go proper aftermarket managment or a later model nissan ECU, eg RB20. If you have someone in your area that can tune the nissan computers they are a good option.

hey guys not all those old flap type units are analogue compatible, if it is +85 production it would be digital compatable so happy hunting.

Note the digital VAF has less pins in the loom connector and can configure to your needs.

good luck
