need advice. i've got my heart set on a 240 z from 70 to 73 and have been searching them on the web for a while. meanwhile theres a 260 silver z on ebay for a buy now price of $4200. it has what looks like 240 bumpers on it (which i prefer) has little surface rust on door, but the hatch sill is black instead of body color and no pics of engine bay. should i save my money and use it towards a 240 or go for the 260.can anyone give me the pros and cons for a 260 or 240?

I agree, if you're really set on a 240Z then the 260 will always feel like a comprimise that you'll never truely be able to adore... especially as a few months after you commit and buy the 260, a 240 will come along that is cheaper and in better condition.

I say just hold firm until you find a 240.

WHOA!

While I admire the intent of holding off until a 240 is available, let me address a few things.

The 240 prices have been steadily going up due to their perceived collectability, lack of availability, and resurgence of popularity due to the 350Z.

This has made them rarer yet and more expensive.

No one has noted that in the U.S. the 260 is actually RARER than the 240. Added to that, their perceived weight / power ratio with regards to racing or speed, has made them somewhat of a "black sheep". The body style is similar enough that without checking title or emblems (if they're correct), or a good knowledge of the model differences, you wouldn't necessarily know the difference.

If you want a Z NOW the 260 would NOT be a bad choice.

Change out some of the undesireable items such as the square top carbs and goose up the engine and you'd have a vehicle that you would be very pleased with. Additionally, if you keep all the original pieces, you would have a car that by simple attrition would evaluate. Possibly evaluating more, in the long run, than the 240 would.

I think it all depends on what you plan on doing with the car. You can hardly tell the difference between a 240 and 260 with the bumpers off and the carbs changed. A few minor differences but they are essentially the same chassis. But $4200 is a lot of money for an old car that isn't all one color though.

John makes a good point.

For $4200 you should get a car in fairly decent condition. The definition of that will vary amongst buyers, sellers and aficionados. Your best bet is to have the car inspected by a third party and / or use escrow payment (i.e. inspect before accept) on delivery.

if ur lyk me and hav ur heart set on a 240, ur not jus in love with the style, the body the blah blah blah, but you also take pride in the history of the 240z... u will sit their kiking :stupid: urself when u buy a 260....
