'74 260Z - jacking

Hi all,

I wanted to put my car up on stands tonight to check the brakes, but a look in the "trusty" Haynes manual was not to clear up my question - where do I put the jackstands???

I figure that I can lift the car on the differential, but the Haynes manual is not very clear on where the axle stands can be placed. In the picture, it looks like the rail to which the swaybar mount is attached is a safe place - would that be sufficiently solid?

It also looks like the front edge of the floor support is where to put the front jackstands... is that correct? They don't look all that structural in this car... any advice (preferably with pics!!!) would be great!!

if your checking the brakes try under the a arm's thats how i do mine i have a 74 260z

Make sure you put a piece of wood between the stand and the A-arm. That's important because the jack stand can slip and dent the arm.

Since you are checking the brakes, you're probably hoping to free-wheel the tires. As a result the jack under the a-arm may be in the way. If that is the case, you might consider jacking via the differential, then puting the stands on the inboard side of the arm.

As far as the front end, you could use the front radiator support if the rail under the floor looks weak.

A safer place to put the jackstands in the rear is the short section of frame rail that runs just in front of the wheelwell, just on the outside of the control arm mounting point.

Best place in the front is on the frame rail just behind the T/C rod mount. Radiator supports can hide rust issues that you won't know about until it's too late.:cross-eye

I called it a radiator support, but if you look in the picture that 2mZ posted, you'll see the cross member support that goes accross the front end in the lower left of the picture.

Now if that is so rusty as to cause problems in jacking, you have a parts car candidate or some MAJOR work to do. Since it is a structural member of the front end, I would expect it to be strong enough to hold up the front end.
