Ed Posted February 20, 2004 Share #3 Posted February 20, 2004 Alright already don't get your pant's in a bunch:classic: . I'm not sure if on the Z it's the same but production cycles usually run from November to October, in other words if your car has a production date after 10/71 your car is considered a 72. If your car has a 10/71 production date then it's a late 71. Where the break between early and late is I don't know.

Ed Posted February 20, 2004 Share #5 Posted February 20, 2004 O.K. found what your looking for. 1970 10/69 - 5/70 1971 1/71 - 8/71 1972 9/71 - 6/72 1973 7/72 - 7/
EScanlon Posted February 21, 2004 Share #6 Posted February 21, 2004 Time out guys! While those lists of numbers seem to denote a hard and fast stop and start point for the different year cars, in actuality there is a LOT of bleed over. While HLS30 006072 is the LOWEST VIN sold as a 1971 Z, as recorded at the registry of zhome.com you can also find that the HIGHEST VIN # sold as a 1970 was HLS30 011618.So now we have 5,546 vehicles that were ..... what? 70's or 71's?The same thing happened in 71/72; 72/73; and although not verified probably happened in 73/74.And that is without looking at the production months. We in the U.S. refer to a Series 1 and a Series 2 as if they were a tangible point that the rest of the world can look at, which is not the case. Additionally, we only had one year of the 260 while other countries had many years. The most accepted differentiation between the "Early-Early" Z and the "Early-Late" (or "Late-Early") Z is the presence of the hatch vents and lack of column vents on the E-E. Then you get into the style of center console, then you get into the dash type, then you get into the seat reclining mechanism or not. Not to mention tool boxes, cutouts on the steering wheels etc.As far as the 71, however the most common differentiation is the location of the vents.2¢Enrique
hls30.com Posted February 21, 2004 Share #7 Posted February 21, 2004 Mr. Ramsey,If it is early-early, late-late, or any where in between, it is bea-utiful!It is what it is, and it is yours! In many cases POs put in what ever replacement parts were avalable: MY Late '73 has a '72 dash, and did when I got it. The '72 I am going to turn shiney side down has a verticle defroster grid.It may be bastardization to some, but that does not mean it didn't happen! I enjoy a car for what it does-a museum holds a car for what it is.William Stokes

zeiss150 Posted February 22, 2004 Share #9 Posted February 22, 2004 Yep, I have weird parts too. I have the rear window from a 71 but my z was built in 5 -72. Also my door jam info plate say's that my car weight is 2800 plus LBS what's up with that 280z's went up that high 72 240's were only suposed to weigh in at around 2389 lbs. so did I get a door jam plate from a 260 2+2 which didn't come out untill 74:stupid:. anyone got any answers for me?Matt-
hls30.com Posted February 22, 2004 Share #10 Posted February 22, 2004 Matt, you got something! Check your vin, maybe your car was put together Locally, not in Japan! It does sound like a 2+2 door plate! I have several '72 coupe parts cars if you want a plate more appropriate to your car, PM me your vin, and when I go back up to the field-45 miles away-I will pull one closer for you.Mr. Ramsey, I didn't figure for you for a guy that gets his skiveys in a knot over guys-Good Z part maybe, but not fellas! Any Z that is being taken care of-even slowly-as long as there is progress is beautiful. I hope you are taking before and after pictures. I am getting ready to start a new "modoration" on the '72. I am also in the throws of moving-er remodeling before the move, when I get moved, I will get the "new" Z in order from the bottom up! zeiss150 Posted February 22, 2004 Share #11 Posted February 22, 2004 Wow! thanks for the offer William. my vin # is HLS3081055. that's a long drive just for a door plate, but you must love driving your z as much as I do:D . Im in the process of restoring my 72, I found it in a dirt lot missing a wheel with a salvage title. It's been a total restoration. Im doing all the work my self from the seats to the engine to the body and paint. Some day not to far off ill be driving the most beautiful Z around. I have another question for you, I put a 5 speed in my z from a junk yard 280 but I dont know what year the trany was from do you know if there is a way to find out what year the trany is from with the serial #. Thanks for you help william.Sincerely, Matt Carso
