subaru differential?

hey everyone,

i have a 74 260z in which i seem to have torn up the differential. I read on ebay that a late 90's subaru legacy has a 3.90 that will supposedly fit into a 240. Does anyone know if this is tru or if any fabrication would have to be done? And if it will fit in a 240 it would fit in my 260 right?

The subaru's generally use the r160 or r180 differential.

I have heard that some of the higher output models (wrx) used an r200. (read bigbucks)

I have never heard of anyone actually attempting it. you would be breaking new ground. please document the conversion.

Any new info on this? There's a guy selling one who says the WRX wagon 160 dif is a 410 LSD direct drop in. No fabricating required, uses factory axels/driveshaft ect.

I haven't seen/heard this anywhere else, so i want to make shure before i pick it up.

Datsun 510's came with R160s from same factory as the R180s and R200s in the Zs. I hear lots of the 510 guys do the swap with the Subaru diff and I believe it can be done with the Z, but don't know the details. Try a search on this site. I think the R160 is not a strong as either the 180 or 200. I too would like to see and hear about the results if you do the swap. Lots of Subies in my area, not usually the high end models tho. Gary

I did a tun of searching on Hybridz last night. It seems the rear will work in a Z, but you need the stub axels out of a R160 510 rear to make it work (the length/spline is slightly off with the R180 axels).

The diff plate the driveshaft ataches to also needs to be swaped to the R180 one (must be done by a rear shop because of the new crush collar needed/correct torq specs for the pinion pre-load, ect).

There is wide debate how strong it is though. Some say they have used it for 2+ years autocrossing with great results, others say they blew it up in a matter of months. So there's no clear consensus about it.

I think i'm just going to save for the R200. There is wide speculation on those as well (which years are better/work, what peices you need for the swap, ect). It's very confusing.
