I am getting a 1971 240Z with an automatic transmission (it doesn't work, slips too much). I am also getting a manual transmission with it (with flywheel, clutch, pedals, etc). Here are my questions:

I know that it will bolt right up to the engine, but what about the driveshafts? Is the length different for the two transmissions?

Also, does anyone know where I could get the manual tranny mounts?

Last thing, where is the best place to get a slave cylinder for it?

is it full of trans fluid? sorry just had to ask... is the fluid brown and burned smelling,.

anyway get a slave cyl from the parts store they are cheap, you could also get a tranny mount from the parts store to, and if your going to put a five speed in i would search a little bit and find out if itll fit int right there is some mod to be done to the early cars trans tunnel do to the shifter, it will fit if you get it from, a 70-83 not turbo z car (please correct me if im wrong) you should take the tranny mount from there to ensure you get the right on at the store.

About the auto tranny, I don't know. I haven't seen it yet!

The manual is from a 1971 240Z that was made about 2 months after the one I am getting. It is the 4 speed.

Does that change anything?

I've searched, but haven't found much about the automatic transmission. (guess its not that popular!)

So, from what I've read, everyone thinks that the driveshaft is the same length for either tranny?

Really sorry i have absolutely no idea. I have never owned an automatic but if your desperate to know i guess i could call someone or ask a mate who has worked on many Z cars.

Otherwise just pull a shaft out of a junk yard Z with a manual transmission.

I do need to find out. I am getting the 240Z this weekend from someone who has a 4-speed that they are throwing in too. But I want to know a head of time if I need to be looking for a new driveshaft.

Anyone else know?

Back in about 1978, I took a '71 240Z with an automatic, and dropped a 4 speed into it. I'm 99% sure I didn't have to replace the driveshaft. That 1% is just because it's been a LONG time! I remember that I forgot to get the flywheel from the junkyard and had to go back, but was amazed that the pedel brackets and clutch master cylinder hole in the fire wall were already there in the car. I should have changed out the distributor too, so I wouldn't have had to deal with the dual points, but I didn't...

So, sorry it isn't a definite, but it's REALLY close to one!

A 99% is much better than what I had before! Thanks! I am getting the flywheel, clutch, pedal, master cylinder and the tubing with it. (just need to get the slave)

Do you mean that the tranny mount and the drive shaft from the automatic tranny fit the manula tranny?

Or do you mean that you swapped in a new driveline and mount with the manual?

Thanks for the clarification. Hopefully there isn't too much difference between the '71 and 73' transmissions.

Oh, and be careful with those motor mounts! How on earth did you break those?!?!?
