Early rotors.....Original style

Hi All,

Several years back I removed one rotor from an early car VIN #3100 or so with the "hat" vented, or with 4 slots.

Would this be an early aftermarket rotor or from the factory?

I posed this question via private email to several early car original owners back 3-4 years ago with all not really sure if they had been swapped out or not...none had this rotor on their cars.

My interest again raised after noticing several photos in the Wick Humble "How to restore" show these same Slotted "hats"Pages 81,86,91,214.

This part considered a requirement for car shows, or considered a wear item?

Is there still a source for these rotors?

Full of questions,

david

Hi David,

That's "Factory".

The early type rotor did indeed have a vented 'hat'. They were superseded pretty early into production, but I don't have any information on exactly or even roughly when it may have been.

My current project car, a Fairlady Z-L built towards the end of 1970, still had them on it when I started to rebuild it. However, they were warped, rusty and had already been re-faced at least once. They were junk, but I have no doubt that they were the originals that came with the car when it was new. This car had several parsimonious owners before me!........

The part number for the early ( vented hat ) rotor was 40206-E4100 and this was superseded by the non-vented ( I believe ) type 40206-E4101.

The sheetmetal dust-shield is also different on the earlier cars, as it has what amounts to a scoop shape pressed into it. Later cars did not have this.

Here's a pic from the early Japanese parts list, which shows the 'vented' rotor quite clearly:
