240z Power Steering?

Is it even possible? By possible, I mean is it plausible, and please no one say, "With enough money, anything's possible..." I know. Just wondering if the goodies from another Z can be swapped in. I think it would fit nicely with my "modernization" theme. That is, if I can get my *@#@*($ blower working...

You should probably search the junkyards and check the steering components on ZX's, 810's, and pre-85 Maximas. If the parts look like they mignt be compatible, that would be the way to go costwise. I once thought about doing that to my 78 280Z. I've never actually seen one done. When I get a chance, I'm going to compare my Z (non ps) to my 810 (ps). I'll let you know what I find out.

The important things to remember is to match the spacing of the mounting brackets. Then you got the steering rack in front of the crossmember . if you can do that, you just gotta connect the steering column (hopefully it's a straight shot and the engine mounts aren't in the way.)

Then just mount a pump & drive belt and plumbing. You might check the Hybridz site on this one. There are a few alternatives to nissan parts already, and new ones come up occasionally.

Going back to my previous post, I had forgotten one thing. The 810 doesn't have rack and pinion steering. It has power recirculating ball steering. The 81-84 Maximas had rack and pinion. I'll have to research some ZX's next time I go to the junkyard.

There is a member here that installed a Subaru power steering unit in his Z. I can't remember his name, he's from Australia I believe and has a highly modified yellow Zed. Someone help me.

After further review:

81-84 Maximas have power rack and pinion

81 ZXTs had power rack and pinion

82-83 ZXs and ZXTs had power rack and pinion

Don't know if they will fit a series 1 but it's a good place to start checking.

I guess as long as you remember that it would be okay! But seriously, I'm not very familiar with the suspension and steering in a ZX.

there seems to be a consensus that the early Zs need to have the rack in front of the crossmember- no room for mounting behind.

Otherwise, all you'd need is to make up some steering arms that are backward, and then you 'could' use a ZX rack.

The later Mustang rack seems to be the best thing so far. Mustang II might even work. Nobody tried that yet.

Unless there's something else, like from aHondu or something front wheel drive. I've been considering my Escort's rack, but can't find it!

You may be able to use steering arms of another model, but dont forget you would also have to relocate the radius rods from the rear to the front,,,, its not worth it.
