New Zed article for Aussie guys

For all you Aussie Zed car fanatics there is an article in the latest edition of Speed magazine, article is basically a comparison between the 240 and 350.

The journo heaps a fair bit of praise on the 240 which is what we would all expect, however he does go on to say that the 240 was penned by Goertz and that the car "being a very early one was in fact the 696th such Zed ever made" (what about the several thousand HLS and Japanese home market cars that were built before this one).

The car is also described as a 1970 car which is what it's owner believes but is in fact a 71 car, it has all the mods made from early 71 on (I've seen the car in the flesh)

Taking these minor error's into account it's good to see the original Zed getting so much good press in a mag associated with modern day sports cars.

Yeah I read that article. Looks like the journalist was misinformed. I've talked to fellow Z owners owners that think Goertz designed the 240z quote "All the books I've read say he designed it".

I recently bought a copy of Datsun 280Z & 280ZX, full of period magazine articles, and one magazine even interviewed Goertz when the 280ZX was released to get his opinion (He was living in the USA) and the article clearly states that Goertz desinged the 240z and it was the second car he did for nissan. (Page 30, if anyone is in a bookshop, and spots the book).

As for that car in speed magazine. What are those brackets on the shock towers?

The trouble is with these things if you read them in articles, books etc and don't know any different you believe what you read until informed otherwise, even then you'll probably believe what you have read over what Joe Bloggs tell's you.

I have'nt got a clue what the brackets are, did'nt even notice them until you mentioned them.

Have you seen this particular car?

I have seen it at a few events like the Sandalford sprints, the first time I went to see it I made the mistake of asking why he could'nt bring his 1970 car to the event (a coment made in complete innocence) his reaction was as if I had just slapped his elderly mother.

He then went on to tell me about why his car was a 70 mdel year, I did'nt have the heart to tell him otherwise as it seemed very important to him.

A nice car but it was showing signs of being well used so all credit to the guy.

Yeah Its weird. Ian has an early car, but it has the lip on the radiator support pannel like a 73 onwards has.

The car featured belongs to a guy called Rich Davies, when you refer to Ian, do you mean Ian Dredge, I sold him an early car some time back, the VIN number was 117, it was'nt original and needed a great deal of work, far more than the car I have just had restored.

I look forward to the day when I can see it restored to it's former glory.

I would suggest that the radiator support panel in the car I sold to Ian may well have come out of another car, with the amount of rust the car had elsewhere I would be amazed if that particular panel was original anyway.

I have another 3 books coming from the USA from Ebay.

One of them is the book nissan put out to introduce the 280zx.

I hear its pretty rare, but they seem to pop up on ebay fairly often.

Rich is a nice guy and he has a nice car. The article does not mention however, that the car has a very warm L28 with triple webers, uprates suspension all round, etc, etc. A stock 240 might not have got quite the same rave review when compared to the 350z..

I was a little disappointed with the article actually. The photos were nice, but I don't think it actually "said" much... that noted, one of the British car mags has the same review (350Zv240Z) next month on the Aussie stands..it'll be interesting to compare!

Judging by the little preview photo it looks like the yellow car that was featured in Classiccars a few months ago..
