Stock, tired engines probably won't go much more than 6-6.5K..

Newly built engines with new valve springs and a performance cam won't have any trouble up to 7-7.5K

Go to 8K to often( if it will even go that high), you may be picking up pieces....

The shorter stroke of the L-24 will allow it to rev higher than the longer stroke of the L-28.

It's my understanding the the horsepower and torque curves peak well before 7000 rpm on a stock engine too, so there isn't much point in going higher.

Do you live on the board Carl ?!? I thought I was fast enough to get mine in!

ok maybe it's just me, but when I hit 5.5-6k and the exhaust i have it just seems like it SHOULDN'T go any furthor!!

I mean this thing SCREAMS!! not sure if it's the exhaust or if it's the engine itself screaming.... but sure doesn't sound like it can hit 7k then again i've never been in a 6 with a 7k+ tach

my original focus with 7k tach was 4 cylinder and even it screamed at that high but at least i knew it's limits. hell even the cam i had it in still had power after 7k but rpm on ecu stopped it at 7150.

the only thing that scares me is that this has no ecu to stop the rev's so i'm not sure what's safe. plus I dunno when the engine was last rebuilt. I do know it won't be much longer before I remove the engine and drop in a ls1 tho :D

You could buy an MSD 6AL ignition modual (or is it 6A?) . One of them has a "rev limiter" built in. I'm buying the 6AL and putting it on my rebuilt L28 sitting in my den. I have it down to the block, just need to get off my butt and get it milled, port and polished, and bored to a 3.1 stroker. Still tossing the idea around about getting the Jim Cook supercharger. Don't know yet.

Good luck with the LS1 swap CabelSrv and welcome to the Z family. :classic:

Now that you have put synthetic oil in the engine , as the man said , and engine that has sludge buildup is likely to have this stuff knocked loose. That and the fact that you dont know how many miles since a rebuild ,or if it has been, you run this engine to even 5 1/2 K vary often and you are going to be driving a gernade. At that high RPM you float a valve from a weak spring and again like the man said you will be picking up the peices.

wow talk about a LATE reply.

well engine runs great now that i retuned the carbs :D btw cd2 removes all gunk and sludge from an engine in case you've never used it before :D

second engine is not a l24 it's a l28e with n42 head so this engine HAS been rebuilt but anyway thanks for the reply :D
