After several hours of encouraging the nuts off the j bolts using both liquid wrench type spray and an impact wrench, I've still made little progress.

I fear I may have to cut the bolts (I may succeed at cutting the nuts, however.

Can anyone supply a pair of bolts should I need them?

Not sure if they changed after the tank redesign, but my project is 1971.

Thanks

You can probably save the J bolts, as you mentioned, if you can split the nuts. A small high speed disc grinder or a nut splitter may be in order, if you have the room! Just remember you're working around a gas tank. Let us know how things turn out.

Larry,

If you have a problem getting replacement bolts just do what I did.

Get new bolts and nuts/lock washers of similar diameter and length. Lock the head in a vise and and put a nut on the other end. Then use a propane torch to heat the head end until it gets cherry red ( use the old bolts for reference). Clamp on a pair of vise grips on the nut and bent the bolt until it resembles the original.

Cool it off in a bucket of cold water and you're good to go:love: .

Cheers,

Peter

Yup. I got some a couple months ago from her. They'll be really nice when it's time to put things back together. Now if there were just new straps to be had....
