Whoa! That sounds really unsophisticated! Every thermo fan setup I've ever installed has used a temperature sender unit that is immersed in the coolant. Most sensors are usually slipped into the coolant via the top radiator hose connection.

Your sensor would be effectively measuring a combination of air and metal temperature, both of which would vary rapidly over very short periods of time... if its working then fine...but it sounds strange to me

I have known people to drill and tap a hole in the water outlet and mount the temp sender for their electric fan there. Seems to me if you have the skills to do it that way it would be much more accurate.

The one JTR reccommends is the Black Magic 150 puller.

I mistakenly called it a Black Max in an earlier post.

Just installed an electric fan from Victoria British last weekend.

Long story, short version:

Radiator started to leak.

Traded a friend for a Mortorsport 3 row radiator.

Radiator is too wide to use with stock fan clutch.

(Car has been wrecked several times)

Installed the electric fan as a way around the short distance.

Temperature unit is in the lower left corner of radiator, under the shroud.

So far it works great. Cuts on when the air temperature through the radiator is about 190 and runs for about 5 min after car cuts off.

I used the AC circuit (which does not work anymore) to power and have not experienced any problems.

Gentelmen, why are you guys saying I claimed a 10% improvemnt in H.P. (freed up HP) from an electric fan??? If you READ my post, I said that the total of the three mods I did MAYBE gave me a 10% increase. And I think that's a pretty fair SWAG. Give me a break guys....please don't vent your personal frustrations on me, I was just trying to help out a fellow member who had a question about electric fans.

Running two 10 inch Mr Gasket electric pullers ordered from Jegs. Painless 185 degree thermostat, relay, circuit breaker and wiring. Took a saturday after noon to install. I have a 280Z inlet housing with the thermostat screwed into the heater hose connection. Why did I make the change? Simple, stock radiator fan chewed up my brand new radiator one cold and rainy autox day and I didn't want it to happen again. Very happy with the setup.

No body is venting on you. I believe his question was would he notice the hp freed up by removing the stock fan. I was simply trying to answer that. Rather than sticking things in the radiator, drilling holes for senders, tie wrapping senders to your radiator hose, relying on a manual switch Id prefer to let the car work the way it was designed to. Cars that overheat because of the fan clutch either have an inferior aftermarket one or a malufunctioning factory one. Just my opinion based on my experiences not a rant or a vent. Sorry you took it that way.

I'm not venting nor using your estimates. The point I was trying to make was that each vendor makes claims as to the HP gain of their "superior" product. It seems 10% is the common number. Please re-read my post with this in mind. Perhaps I should have been clearer. Sorry for the confusion.

I have a 73 240 and am consididering doing the electric fan swap. I've measured the clearnce between the radiator and the tip of the 4 bolts on the water pump and it's just about 3". I don't think there has been any accident for this car either.

3" is less than the height of any 12" or lager fan that I've been able to find. Most want at least 1" of space in addition to their height which means I'd need almost 5". How are the rest of you doing it?

I don't think i have ever seen a thermo fan thicker than 2 inches. That is roughly the thicknnes of the one I have. There are quite a few different fans lying aroung the house and they are all about the same size also.

Actually, just realised you can just see the fan in my altivar and it is on the front of the radiator. That is why I had no worries with clearance.
