Hi, I have a 80-280zx-anniversary special-red/black. The thermal vaccuum switch located about centre of the manifold, I broke it!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH! What does it do, what is it connected to, how does it pertain to the running of my car? I changed the fuel rack because i can. It was running great before, then I broke the thermal valve, and now it's running real rough, and filling the air with blueish grey smoke. HELP THIS OLD FOOL PLEASE!!!!!!

High,

A couple of days ago I posted a request for assistance with a simple little thermal switch, and I got a whack of replies. Thanks! but not one was on the money when it comes to this switch.

lets say your going out for a sunny drive in the old ZX, you get a fair ways and the engine starts sputtering, a silver/grey smoke is coming out of the exhaust and your heating up. Your pissed, at the side of the road, werenching your baby and she is not co-operating at all. In fact she won't start! Doesn't even cough! OK! Hot day--greasy guy---deadZ Hmmmmmm, a bad recipe. Time to call a truck, and get this baby home. Just for the hell of it, after you are home, you decide to start her up."It starts", runs for 2-3 minutes and starts to sputter, you mess with the accelerator but the air around you fills with this eye and lung burning gaseous smoke----and she dies!!! Now you say it----******* Jap crap!!!!!

Well this was me guy's and gal's, I was ready to file this beast (and guess what) go out and find another!!!! An associate of mine in Seattle, The Zman, emailed me about the "Thermal Switch". This gizmo sends info to your in car computer, telling it when to inject, how much to inject, climate conditions and temp. It also controls the sensor that decides the timing setting for idle, in most climates. When it decides not to do some of these things, all hell breaks loose. In my case, this sensitive little guy, because of it's age decided that it was winter and the below zero temps meant more gas, a sped up timing on a continual basis. The engine would run, then begin to flood and die. Apparently this problem is all to common, and for $35.00 the problem can be fixed.

The thermal switch I speak of is located 9 inches down the drivers side of the manifold/on the manifold, under the harness for the injectors. Some have two vaccuum stems, and some three. "They can't be messed with/or mixed up" what comes with the car--stays with the car.

I hope you found thi helpful, I sure did
