Hello all,

I've located a 71 in Texas that appears to be pretty clean and well cared for, and I'd like to get some thoughts on the potential value of this car.

The stats:

71 240

2nd owner purchased in 84

Bare metal resto in 90.

Rust in floor area removed, replaced with metal from a 240 parts car's roof section.

Original SU's and head with 280 block approx 15,000 miles on engine. Engine clean, but not immaculate.

5 speed

A/C, but requires a new dryer(?)

Interior very sharp

Exterior very sharp EXCEPT for a slight fracture in the paint where the B pillar meets the door and a spot of rust developing on one of the hatch vents.

Rebuilt suspension with urethane bushings.

The car appears well cared for and the owner is asking $7,500, which I feel is a little high.

Some thoughts on the price, as well as the floor replacement subject and A/C issue would be appreciated.

Also, if anyone is in the Austin area, I would like to know if they are familiar at all with the car I'm describing. Please email me for specifics.

In my opinion $7,500 is a bit too high. For one thing it is not all original, and the floor repair might be OK but if it were truly to be considered a well cared for car it should have been done right with a true replacement floor pan. Also with the engine being modified and a 5 speed it brings the value down some too, but yet some people might buy the car and turn around and do the same mdifications.

The A/C dryer is not much of problem. Change the dryer and charge it. If that is the only problem with the A/C.

The car might be worth it if you really wanted a Z-car bad enough. It's hard to judge. One person might say it's outragiously high and another might write out a check without thinking about it.

It all boils down to what you want, and how much you are willing to pay. You will ultimately have to make the final decision.

I have to agree with 2MZ, it does seem overpriced. Very hard to say from half a country away, but from your description- i'd think $5000 would be closer to asking price...though Z values are steadily creeping up, so i may be a bit behind the times.

But as he's said, it comes down to what you want, how long you'll wait, and how deep them pockets are! Good luck with it. JA

I just bought a 74 260z last week. I paid $3500. Interior is in good shape, body is excellent. No rust. Engine is strong. Don't really know the history as well as you do on the rebuilds, and I'm no z expert but $7500 seems a little high to me too. Check out the pics in the members rides section. Hope this helps.

Thanks all, for the response. This confirms my suspicions that the car is overpriced. I was thinking it was only worth $4,500-5,000,

especially with the odd floor repair and condition of the door.

If it's a Type-I (vents in the rear hatch, storage on the floor in front of the back deck instead of in the deck, etc.) it might go for a little more than a later 1971 Type-II. However, I think anything over $5,000 is too much, and it would have to be in great condition for that much.

Looks like you are in Michigan and this car is in Texas. this would suggest that you are willing to travel to get a car. That's the right attitude!! I found mine 3 1/2 years ago by looking on this website: http://www.collectorcartraderonline.com/

It was a '70, with 69K original miles, no rust, with a very nice new paint job, but needed some interior work for $4,800. Keep looking and take your time. Wait for a truly great car at a reasonable price. They are out there! This web site has 82 240Z's listed right now.

That's right, Marty; I have no issues with distance when it comes to shopping for the right Z; I bought my second Z sight unseen from Arizona when I was 19 (a rust free 70 for $2,000). After selling it in college (reluctantly ) I've been hunting on collectoronline for either a clean 240 or an older 911.

Of course, about 6 mos ago I came across a spotless 3 owner 71 with 34,000 original miles for $4,800 that was just down the street, but my 94 Mr-2 prevented me from buying it

$4800 for a 34K car! IF the condition is what the mileage would suggest, thhe car should have been like new. That would have been a hell of a deal! I saw one 36K car recently selling for $13K. I don't really thing anyone into Z's would really pay that, but, they say a sucker is born every minute.
