What's wrong with Automatics

it seems 3 gears in the automatic tranny won't reach the 70mph. False, I reach 100mph. At that point it felt good, only a little vibration, so I have to slow it down. Think I can do 110mph, with this automatic, but I'm looking for more, more boost, want to squeak tires, want more control of the gears.

I'm gonna drive the auto for a while, make some adjustment and tunning, and then decide.

Now I'm shure nothing is wrong with the automatic Zcar. The problem is "not being confortable with what you have".

My first car was a '71 240Z with an automatic. Changed it out for a 4 speed after driving it for a year. I just love the shifting. I drive my 5-speed 280Z now, and when I need more than two seats, I drive my 5-speed Camry! Only when I'm forced to do the minivan thing do I give up my shifter.

An automatic would sure be a lot more convenient around town, but who cares ROFL ! Drive what you like...

Oh, and isn't the differential a little lower geared than in the manual (3.36 vs 3.54 or something?) Also, you get to deal with the dual point distributor on the automatic. If it was originally an automatic car, of course.

Hi mdbrandy,

You're correct that the automatic equiped 240Zs came with a 3.54 rear-end versus the 3.36 in the manual. It actually works out well if you do a 5-speed swap(you do have to select your 5-speed carefully as they came in different gear ratios). You get the best of both worlds; quicker acceleration and lower rpm's at highway speeds in 5th gear.

You probably already know this but, I'll toss it out anyway.....The dual point distributor can be easily swapped out with one from the manually equiped cars. Toss in a Petronix electronic ignition and only you will know that things aren't as they appear. BTW, the Petronix will not work with the dual point distributor.

I wouldn't call it ruin- but if you see it that way...:mad: even some of the fastest drag cars have auto trannys. And the best street rods.

Like Proxlamus said, even the newest sports cars, race cars (rally carrs), and luxury cars (Lincoln LS) come with paddle-shifting autos.

My 72 with L28/SU's and auto tranny will power slide around any coner on dry pavement which leaves my hands on the wheel. It is most fun. Since I drive it like a wild man, I never have to worry about missing a shift or keeping the RPM in the power band. Plus for around town between stoplights its sometimes nice not to have to shift all the time.

My 73 is 4 speed though so I get the best of both worlds.

I have heard that auto trannies will get you to 60 faster than manuals also. If properly set up and working right.

My grandma never learned to drive period so I dont hold it against Tomohawk.
