What's wrong with Automatics

Anyone actually driven a Auto with a stall and shift kit ? Much better then manual.. launch harder shift better and are still great for town work... in traffic and all...

just pick your stall right dont want to be doing 5,000rpm @ 100km/h LOL

ps... Auto's do better burnouts LOLROFL

Do you mean you can use a low stall speed converter to act like an overdrive of sorts? If it's too low, you would stall the engine waiting at a traffic light, but then, you'd be turning 2000 rpm @ 55 mph...Not a bad idea if you got the torque to start off the line.

If you had a manual valve body, what shifter would you use? Do you think there is an auto shifter with something like a 4-speed gate pattern? :love:

I think the answer to the question about auto vs. manual is like a lot of other things in Z land:

It depends on what you want from your Z.

For me, mine is a 3rd car and NOT my daily driver. Also, it's something for me to apply my "creative juices" towards. If the weather isn't good, then the Z stays in the garage. If it's going to be a long trip, then I take one of our newer cars that is quieter, get's better mileage (at least for one of them), and don't require shifting. But if it's Saturday morning and I'm going out to run errands and have a little fun :classic: , then the Z is my first choice. Of course, I am fortunate to have the choice of other vehicles.

If the Z was my only vehicle, and I had to use it for work as well, then I'd have to switch to an automatic. I get too many cell calls during the day and shifting, steering, and holding a phone just don't go together safely.

So it all goes back to what YOU want from YOUR Z. Either way they are fun cars, the Z community such as this website is a great group to be hanging around with (at least virtually), and you can customize the car to what YOU want.

The point is a good one. No matter what way you like your Zed, or what way you customize it, everybody here should accept it for what it is is, and not turn up their nose.:finger:

As long as you do the work right, and don't paint it with paisleys....:ermm: :sick:

Having a hi stall or low stall converter won't change the overall ratio. Just incase 280zx fevers post threw anyone off.

It is like a clutch that will keep slipping up to the stall rate, whether is be 1800rpm or 4500rpm. The closer it gets to the stall point, the less it slips. Having said that, a 4500rpm stall would severely increase fuel comsumption.

Auto's are made to change gears fast and hard. Most people don't want this so car manufactures restrict oil passages and stuff so that the autos sliiiiiiiide into gear smoothly, ensuring that the driver/passengers don'e spill their coffee. They also wear out faster because of this. Get a shift kit and the oil gets through better, the gears change faster, wheels chirp and less fuel gets used. Down side, it is all a bit harder on the driveline.

My fathers HQ 1 tonner ute with the holden 308 would chirp gear changes with work gear in the back and 265 tyres. Until the input shaft on the auto snapped off. Also broke the teeth off a few diffs.

Useless background info I know, but just incase someone was unsure.

So I would want a converter with a slightly lesser stall speed to make a better 'connection' between the flywheel & trans, so the rpm should come down some ( a little) at speen in the highway (65 mph)

That would be nice. I'm going for a little more mpg so I can go places without dsriving from gas station to gas station. 17 gal x 25 mg =425 miles. 3 fill-ups gets me to FL!

i dont wanna put you auto guys down or nothing

i thought about this and remembered my cousin.

his dad built him a truck.

81 GMC highly modified 350.

twin for barrel carbs, high performance cam. the works.

of cource he worked at a chevy delership so free parts:devious:

anyway they put a 350 turbo in it. the thang wouldnt evan catch high gear untill 90 mph.

then the tranny flew all over the road. hes gone through 5 trans all auto. he put a five speed in and hassent had any trouble.

knowing him he probably doesnt LOL.

im not against autos, it might not be such a bad idea to have one.

that would save me the $200 hydrolic cluch. now yall got me thinking LOL.

i have plenty of choices ive got 3 4speeds a 5 speed .

and a auto.

sorry if my arguing affended anybody.

im good at ticking peaple off lately.

Most torque converter's or at least enwer ones have what's called a Lock Up torque converter.

Pretty much at high speed's the toque converter disables, and the engine and transmission are directly locked together just like a standard tranny.

Then when you reach slower speeds the converter enables again and you still "slush" around the liquid in the torque converter.. so there is a minimum power loss from the engine to the tranny with torque converters..... but with a High Stall speed and lock up... you are running much much better for all around purposes
