Which car(s) have manual shifters that use cales instead of rods?

In a Z? None that I know of.

I mean used in any car they got now.

All the FWD cars used cables as far as I know, as do most all FWD cars by any manufacturer. In a longitudinal engine, it's not needed, only on the transverse engines would they need a cable.

I was going to get a shifter from a newer Escort last summer, but it looked way to hard to do it without getting under there. the JY has all the cars on the ground... So maybe I can call around to see if there's a JY with the shifter already out.

The problem is JYs all want a SPECIFIC model & year, so can you suggest one?

You know I'm talking about a

manual trans shifter , not automatic.

I'd say they need the specific model/year for a reason, probably has to do with whatever engine the model may have been equipped with as standard equip or optional.

I have no ideas other than that, never messed with front drivers of any kind....

I think it's more like they don't want to do any thinking- just make the sale. Because if they get you the part they think you want, it might not be what YOU were thinking of and have to take it back, get another one... It helps me to know where to start.

Tomohawk, don't think your going to find ANY manual transmissions shifted by cable. Automatics yes, manuals no.

I've had Hondas, VW's, Chryslers all with front wheel drive and manuals. All have had rods and bellcranks.

Maybe some example from Suzuki (motorcycle experience with cables, though Honda has same and uses rods) or Daewo (bicycle experience?) might just be the exception.

I just wonder how you think cables could be an advantage over rods for shifting a manual?

Besides, the Z has one of the best linkages you'll ever find, stock.

I have a 93 Olds Achieva 5 speed that is all cable linkage.

I came back from the U-Pull-It today after the bushings

for the linkage. Almost all early to late 90's GM FWD cars

are cable. Grand Am, Baratta, Achieva. Sunfire, Skylark

Cavalier, Malibu, Alero many to choose from.
