1975yellowBSPZ Posted March 22, 2004 Share #4 Posted March 22, 2004 IMO, best bet: decent turbo motor w/ adjustable boost controller, larger TB and mega squirt computer. Put an LSD, that will make more differce then most of the engine mods anyway. Simple easy swap that the car was designed for.
mellow Posted March 24, 2004 Author Share #5 Posted March 24, 2004 billramsey, hahaha i wish i had the money to do that mate....1975yellowBSPZ, yes a turbo engine would be probobly the simplest & probobly one of the cheaper options too but as i am still on my P plates i cannot register a turbo under my own name...plus turbos are getting more comoon these days, i would like to have something a little different.....thanks for the input tho, i do appreciate it....mellow :dead:
zeiss150 Posted March 25, 2004 Share #6 Posted March 25, 2004 I would change your head from a P-79 to an N-42 It will boost your compression to about 9.8:1 then throw on a header, and a mild cam, and make sure you have a 3.90 rear end, put it all in a 240z body (just kidding) and you should have a pretty quick little car. I don't know if you have junk yards where you live, but here (in sunny southern california) an N-42 head is about $75. a new header is about $160. and the cam is about $160. but you will need new rocker arms so the cam job will cost you about $400. Basically it ain't cheep. Have fun, Matt
mellow Posted March 27, 2004 Author Share #7 Posted March 27, 2004 Hey Matt, thanks heaps for the reply mate, much appreciated.....yes we do have wrecking yards here in oz, but i already have the N42 head on it....so next mabie i should be thinking a cam & a bore job?after putting in a new cam, will i have to get a new chip or anything for the ECU?i think our headers cost a little more over here but are still pretty readily avalibe......thanks alot, mellow:dead:
ZmeFly Posted March 27, 2004 Share #8 Posted March 27, 2004 Go with a turbo motor, rebuild it, buy a good ic, plumb it, 60mm tb, T3/T4 turbo, HKS metal head gasket, boost controller, LSD rear and a complete from turbo back 3 inch exhaust. For your 4k that should put you at about 350hp easily with a little to spare if you spend wisely.Best overall bang for the buck, starting you off right away with an extra 30hp. Thats before any mods
zeiss150 Posted March 27, 2004 Share #9 Posted March 27, 2004 Hey mellow, A 270 duration with a 460 lift is a really good, mild cam for street driving it pulls hard from 2000 - 6000 RPM. If you do put in a new cam you have to change out your springs, rocker arms, and lash pads. A new cam set up is about $500 american. I don't know if you need to change your ECU. I checked the motor sport catalog and they don't sell a performance ECU for 80-83 ZX's. The only way I would Bore out the motor is if you were going to rebuild the engine, new rings, bearings, pistons, the works (Im going through that right now). Another thing you can do is up grade your ignition. Bigger better spark = more HP. The header is a must, along with a 2 1/2 inch exaust system, with a nice dynomax high flow muffler. If that set up doesn't make your head snap back, you need a turbo motor. Good luck my Auzzy friendMatt-
mellow Posted March 27, 2004 Author Share #10 Posted March 27, 2004 Hey ZmeFly, well that all sounds goo apart from i just spent 2 large rebuiling this engine & now im having troubles finding anything fun to do with it....is it worth while modifying this engine to take a turbo, or pretty much not worth the bother?!?!Zeiss150, cheers for the info on the cam, ive been looking into cams alot lately so it helps to know what is a decent grind...& as ive already stated i have just rebuilt this engine (about 1500km ago now) and i was thinking of doing the bore next....as for the new ignition system, what do i look for? any brands in particular you can reccomend?the headers i agree with they are a definate!!!i am trying to pick up a new set now, i want to run 6-2-1's into 2 1/2 piping with a decent hotdog type muffler and a nice big stainless steel dump pipe (already have)my whole car has been a pretty slow process so far & i really want to get some mod's happening soon......what amount of horsepower gain would i be ablet o get by putting bigger injectors in it????mabie i will have to stick with the turbo & a 150 hp shot of nitrous...thanks once again, cris:dead:
280zx Fever Posted March 28, 2004 Share #11 Posted March 28, 2004 mellow 1st and formost would be to tell us what engine u have L28E dah... i mean castings on the block F54 Block with flat tops and N42 Small Chamber head will give u a kick in pants 10:1 compression. Is the car auto or manual ? that will determine the ratio diff if its stock... stock manual i think is 3.08 and auto is 3.90 good luck
mellow Posted March 29, 2004 Author Share #12 Posted March 29, 2004 Hey 280ZX fever, well the block is an F54, the head is an N42 and it has the BOSCH multi point injection......as for the pistons, im not actually sure, i will try to find out asap though....This motor is in good condition as i have just fully rebuit it, that is why id rather work this engine than buying a turbo one....It has the standard 3 speed auto and it still has the standard diff.....thanks once again, cris:dead:
